On The Wane - Schism Album Review - Post Image - (300x300)ARTIST: On The Wane

RELEASE: Schism

RELEASE DATE: 20th November 2017

RECORD COMPANY: Unsigned

Kiev based four piece 'On The Wane' merge a plethora of genres to form their collective sound, from sullen shoegaze to driving noise rock, throbbing post-punk to oscillating pulses of new wave and atmospherically tinged gothic influences. The band have returned with their third album, brilliantly titled 'Schism'. This new ten track LP follows on from their 2015 released long player 'Sick' and see's the band continuing on with their infatuation of brewing a heady and melodic concoction of stunning soundscapes. 'On The Wane' are Daria Maksimova - bass/vocals, Anna Lyashok - drums/vocals, Eugene Voitov - guitar/synth & Eli Demyanenko - guitar. 'Schism' gets it's full official release on November 20th 2017 and is available to pre-order right now via onthewane.bandcamp.com

'Schism' unfurls it's sonic tendrils swirling in a cloud of angry atmospherics as stunning vocalisations courtesy of Daria Maksimova ride a tempestuous feedback laden wave. 'Truth Isn't Bright' undulates on a pulsating wave of sequenced percussion and subtle bass frequencies underpinned with periods of fuzzy guitar and electronic whirrs. There's a truly magnificent post-punk edge cutting straight through this opening piece separated at times by jangling lead lines and the twang of whammy bar. Up next, 'Fear' creeps into earshot strapped to a bedrock of electronic percussion and the addictive hum of bass. Swirling vocalisations envelope the entire piece forcing you to focus primarily on their calmness as all around it swims in a dark atmospheric sea. Sublime guitars meld with catchy hooks steeped in reverb pulling this track into a raging break filled with tormenting instrumental progressions more akin to a kind of art-rock than anything else. It's a simply masterful track and really hard to tie down influentially making it a stand out piece on the album for me. 'Human Race' jangles into earshot swirling through layers of deep atmospheric reverberation wrapped around a blistering guitar progression. Sequenced percussion holds a motorik beat underfoot as undulating instrumental drones bellow and move atop throbbing bass frequencies. There are echoes of hard hitting post-punk meandering through these gothic tinged new wave vibes that intertwine with intense vocalisations. It's explosive chorus passages inject subtle moments of noisy shoegaze making it an utterly addictive listen.

'Sultry Song' drapes a sullen atmospheric film over proceedings as the pull of lead guitar battles vehemently through layers of reverb and busy percussion whilst continuously vying for space in amongst repetitive sequenced shakers and swells of dark fizzing synth. It's an angry animal; dark, oppressive and almost soundtrack like in it's approach thats majestically bolstered by another impressive vocal performance. Up next, 'Revenge (Deeper Than You Can Imagine)' bounds into the ether on a pulsating wave of off beat percussion, sporadic bass frequencies and resonating guitars. It's post-punk credentials are laid bare for all to see but there's an added hazy layer of production sitting just under the mix that makes this track stand out and watch out for the break half way through that will knock your socks off because the instrumental build that follows afterwards is absolutely immense. The slow almost metronomic opening bars of 'Alcohol' skulks into earshot riding a deep melodic bass line constantly harassed by punishing guitar stabs and menacing production theatrics. The vocal lines float effortlessly as it's verse parts play out, building in both intensity and atmosphere until we're finally thrown head first into a raging cacophony of instrumental noise as it's chorus parts shift up a gear and inject some fantastic noise-rock into proceedings. It's a blistering track and worthy of your ears.

'Drop Bombs' is a sonic call to arms and it explodes into a menacing crescendo with stunning vocal lines and brilliantly executed instrumentation culminating in a noisy angst ridden finale whilst 'The Real Coward' swirls around an opening guitar progression and a busy rolling drum pattern. It builds and builds before unleashing a broiling sonic behemoth filled with raging guitars and punishing production before calming into a slow burgeoning juggernaut, it's vocal lines leading the charge as we're led into a torrent of effortless noise. The albums penultimate track entitled 'Home' throbs as it enters the sonic arena. It's opening bars are instrumentally reminiscent of modern day psych with it's tumbling fuzz laden guitars and the angry throb of bass frequencies all riding a brilliant percussive beat but it's when the vocals arrive that this track comes into it's own. The collective instrumentation roll's and twist's to form a protective barrier around Maksimova's vocals, filling every space with noise and atmosphere and allowing the track to flow freely as it works through it's predesigned sonic structure. For me it shows another side to 'On The Wane', it's also pretty impressive and possibly my favourite track on the entire release. The album closes out rippling on a pulsating wave of fizzing electronics as a sullen vocal track materialises out of the ether. 'Bad News' draws fuzzy guitars and angry synths into the mix to meld with deep dark bass frequencies to deliver a short sharp shock. It's a brilliant ending to what is a very impressive album.

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT | On The Wane

1492479_825770064159699_8071404703496547585_o

Kyiv based 'On The Wane' are a truly Immense musical force! They released their stunning debut album 'Dry' on the 19th December 2014. We had the pleasure of viewing it for the Primal Music Blog & you can check out what we thought of it: HERE

'On The Wane' are well balanced, competent musicians who are not afraid to experiment with sound. Not only do they create sonically astute soundscapes through the medium of high octane shoegazing but they also breach the barriers between genre’s to produce a melodic concoction of 80’s/90’s Post-Punk, New-Wave & full on Noise-Rock. On the verge of their first Ukrainian tour, we caught up with the band and asked them a few questions on influences, shoegaze, future plans, their beautiful country & inspirations. Check it out:

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BAND? WHERE ARE YOU FROM? FORMATION? BAND MEMBERS?

We are “On The Wane” from Kyiv, Ukraine. Eugene, Daria and Alexander played together in another band previously. 1.5 years ago we decided to play another music in a new band. Few months later we met Anna, she became our drummer. So “On The Wane” was born. It was March of 2014. It was a very hard time for our country The revolution was over but Russia had just started a war in Ukraine. All of our songs were written in this past year so they are maybe a little bit gloomy.

DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?

We want to unite guitar noise and the groovy riffs of rock music. We are between noise, rock, punk and shoegaze. Now we are trying to introduce elements of other non typical(for us) genres of music like surf and even twist! But we still play noisy alternative rock.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=3902929700 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small track=1416400239]

WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES?

Of course, our biggest influence is “Sonic Youth”. It can be heard by everybody who listens to our tracks. But now we try to find our own sound. It’s like “Blonde Redhead”, for example. Their first albums were similar to “Sonic Youth”. But later they found their sound which can’t be confused with anything else. Other our influences are mostly alternative bands of 80s-90s: Cure, R.E.M, Wire, Pixies, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cocteau Twins, Iggy Pop etc.

DESCRIBE YOUR LIVE SOUND?

It’s noisy! :) There are many pop-rock or britpop bands in Ukraine. So most of soundmen in clubs can't understand why we ask them to set vox quieter and to set guitars louder. They think it's unnormal. We must argue with them at almost every our gig. That's why it was difficult to find good soundman for mixing and mastering our tracks for album too. Fortunately we found Alexander Chabanenko. He have done all that we wanted and even more.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMdeEjcM4X0&w=640&h=360]

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT PLAYING LIVE?

We like to feel the energy. We like when people slam and mosh under a stage. We like when people know the words of our songs. When people give their emotions and energy, we give it to them too. Playing live is the best feeling in life. It's like sex ....... but better!

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJSibyehcK4&w=640&h=360]

BEST LIVE GIG THAT YOU GUYS HAVE PLAYED SO FAR?

We are young band, so we haven’t played on big stages or at big festivals yet. Now we only play in clubs. Our last gig in one of these clubs was cool. The general public were nice. In a months time we go to our first Ukrainian tour. We hope that the public in other cities will be cool too.

10872883_779568132113226_5287931595378423196_o

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START MAKING MUSIC?

We just love music. Music is our life. We can’t stop listening to it. And we can't stop playing it either. We love our guitars & drums, our garage, our city. All of this inspires us. Kyiv is a nice place. It can be very friendly and blooming. But it can be gloomy and frightening too. We live in scary but great period. It's time of great changes for our country & for us. We've already showed that we are not a part of the USSR or ex-USSR already, we are just part of  a civilized world. This  inspires us too.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SHOEGAZE?

We like that guys like Kevin Shields or Robin Guthrie decided to play music that it wasn't similar to music played by other bands of that period. It was challenging. They invented a new sound and a new type of music and it was great!

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=3902929700 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small]

IS IT A SHOEGAZE REVIVAL OR A REBIRTH? WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THR RECENT FILM 'BEAUTIFUL NOISE' AND REUNIONS OF BANDS LIKE RIDE, SWERVEDRIVER, MEDICINE & SLOWDIVE?

It’s a revival. All these band reunions are really great, but we don’t believe that we will hear new “Souvlaki” for example. The world needs new bands, new brave guys that can invent electric guitar anew, like Hendrix or Thurston and Lee did that in their times. Alternative rock more dead than alive. Its a sad statement but a true one. 'Beautiful Noise' is a good film about old times. But we prefer to listen to bands instead of watching films about them.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR THE WORLD TO HEAR YOUR MUSIC? WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH INTERNATIONAL LISTENERS?

We don't know if it's important for somebody to listen to our music. We are glad that somebody thinks it's good. If somebody feels something hearing us, this is awesome! One message that we can share with our listeners is don't spend your time listening to bad music! Listen to music that evokes emotions! That's all.

MUSICALLY WHAT ARE YOUR BANDS PLANS FOR THE NEXT YEAR?

We plan to record our new EP or maybe a new LP. Maybe it will be this year?  We do have some new tracks. We dream about a European tour. If we could find label that help us to organize gigs in Europe, we would be delighted. This is our main goal now.

CAN YOU NAME SOME BANDS FROM YOUR COUNTRY OR ELSEWHERE AS RECOMMENDED LISTENING?

We are proud that we lived in a country with “Ummagma”. We think they are one of the best dream-pop bands ever. Another nice shoegaze Ukrainian band is “Mandarinaduck”. We love their songs. And we like other nugaze/dreampop bands like 'Ringo Deathstarr', 'Place to Bury Strangers' & 'DIIV'. One of the best punk-bands of this past year is 'White Lung'. And we adore 'Savages’, they are a perfect post-punk band.

ALBUM REVIEW | On The Wane - Dry

a3187466384_2

ARTIST: On The Wane

RELEASE: Dry

RELEASE DATE: 19/12/14

RECORD COMPANY: Unsigned

Today is a good day after all. I’ve been screaming through a list of submissions for the blog & feeling frustrated at the general state of the musical trite that had been sent to us for potential review. I was just about to give up all hope when I came across a band who had contacted the blog a few weeks back. This band blew my mind from the very first listen to their recently released album entitled - ’Dry’. They are a truly Immense musical outfit! Well balanced, competent musicians who are not afraid to experiment with sound. Not only do they create sonically astute soundscapes through the medium of high octane shoegazing but they also breach the barriers between genre’s to produce a melodic concoction of 80’s/90’s Post-Punk, New-Wave & full on Noise-Rock. Kiev based ‘On The Wane’ are a breath of fresh air in a world of stagnant bands who jump on musical bandwagons and falsely declare themselves as post-punk shoegazers.
‘On The Wane’ were formed in 2014 in Ukraine and believe in everything 80’s & 90’s Alternative, Post-Punk, shoegazing, New-Wave, No-Wave & Noise-Rock. The band are: Anna Lyashok - drums & vocals, Daria Maksimova - bass & vocals, Eugene Voitov & Alexander Yarosevich - guitars. They like knobs turned right, dissonances, noise meditations & motoric rhythms. That’s an incredible list of influential musical genres and a bloody epic statement of intent! Strap yourselves in ..... This is extreme shoegazing at it’s very best.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=3902929700 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small]

The album opens up with the mind bending ’Shelter’. Expressive soaring guitars co exist with addictive, sharp arrangements, pounding drums & a throbbing bassline. Throw into this mix of intense pulsating sound waves the enthralling vocal lines and we have something beyond brilliant. Im hooked after 2 minutes. It is that intense.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3902929700 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3194354669]

Track 2 is a homage to all things Sub Pop. ‘Sweet Girl’ is a powerful juggernaut of a track that has everything going on in it. It powers through seconds of thundering guitars, bass & drums with an abandon. The hauntingly intensive vocal arrangements are reminiscent at times to early Lydia Lunch & Sonic Youth. They will have you transfixed on this bands complete sound. The vocals have a Post-Punk snarl that are so addictive at times you just want to melt into them and become one with the music. Stunning!

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3902929700 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1416400239]

Menacing distortion somehow filled with melodic guitar hooks announce the arrival of another astonishing track from this Ukrainian outfit. ‘Road And Snow’ continues this bands journey through the medium of soaring bass heavy guitars, pounding drums & addictive vocal tones. This is simply brilliant. Check it out:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3902929700 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=55289034]

Track 4 begins with Punk Rock connotations stuffed menacingly between a heady mix of ‘Souxsie & The Banshees’ & the ferocity of ‘The Sex Pistols’ all intertwined with a Bauhaus infusion until the chorus explodes onto the musical canvass and streaks across the skyline in a haze of brilliantly executed guitar play. This self titled track will have you jumping around your bedroom & tormenting your neighbours with it’s intensity.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3902929700 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3204815075]

‘Pheonix’ - Track 5 on this brilliant release, reminds me of early Loop with its intrusive, unsettling yet melodic guitar arrangements. Add into that the stomping drums, blistering bassline & swirling vocals and we have a monster on our hands. A creeping monolith of track that arc’s & swells all over the musical canvass. Sublime!

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3902929700 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=2881345775]

Half way through & I’m still transfixed on this bands explosive sound. ‘1232’ growls like a ‘Pixies’ track mixed with Sub Pop brilliance from its opening notes. Again the addictive vocal tones of Lyashok & Maksimova preach malicious intent and drive this track to its final destination. The guitars on this composition are immense and together with the driving force of the base & drum tracks they make ’1232’ the beast that it is. Check it out:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3902929700 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1761528904]

‘Love Thy neighbour’ is 2 minutes of noise-rock dipped in a punk rock stew and fed through a sonic feeding tube to an audience of waiting lunatics. This is another shining example of how ‘On The Wane’ are capable of switching genres on a whim. Not afraid to mix it up this band are entertaining me completely as every track is a new experience of musical delight.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3902929700 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3545012119]

Track 8 - ‘Autumn’ leads you into a false sense of security with its opening light hearted drum pattern & jangling guitar lines. But don’t be fooled. This track has an explosive inner core that creeps up on you and packs a heavy punch when you least expect it. The vocals are suppressed but melodic & float along during the sublime verses but are set free with the onset of the slightly unsettling chorus’s breaks.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3902929700 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=2067993991]

‘Louder’ swirls into the musical atmosphere with hauntingly brilliant vocal arrangements & a repetitive drum pattern intertwined with reverb drenched guitars. This track reminds me of early 90’s shoegazing stalwarts & UK based - ‘The Cranes’ with its ferocious swirling guitars, hypnotising drumbeat, pulsating baseline and screaming vocals. Another stunning track.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3902929700 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=317639244]

The closing track is a stroke of genius. ‘Joy Division’s - Noise Ceremony’ gets the complete ‘On The Wane’ treatment with full on explosive post-punk brilliance. Vocally sublime with hauntingly addictive tones & musically faultless. A great closing track on an already immense album.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3902929700 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=140911260]
This album blew my mind . . . . . . I am not afraid to say that and to me it goes to show just how good the underground scene is right now in all four corners of this fine planet. Fans of shoegaze, post-punk & early Sub Pop artists will adore this bands complete sound. They create faultless sonic soundscapes that skip through multiple genre’s of an alternative nature with glee. ‘On The Wane’ do this for fun & its not contrived or half arsed either. I believe every single note on this epic release and so should you. Go out and support them by buying their music & go to see them live. I can’t wait to hear what comes next from this band. They truly are a wonder.
