Back in the late 80’s I fell in love with an american based band called ‘For Against’. With full on catchy dream-pop inspired gazing sounds I instantly became a big fan & subsequently collected everything they ever released on Vinyl. Fast forward to last week and imagine my surprise when I was contacted by a band with a sound so reminiscent of ’For Against’ that I had to do a double take! ‘Marble’ – are Elliot C & Julian L, they formed in 2013 in Marlboro, NY over in the U.S & they take their influences from Scott Cortez, Robin Guthrie, Kevin Shields, Bulgarian Choir Music, Bela Bartok & Kate Bush. Marble display that typical ‘For Against‘ sound – the full on high- tempo, gazing soundscape –  that enthralled me back in the late 80’s,  but they have also intertwined a modern edge that is both captivating & laden with melodic dreamy walls of sonically immense reverb drenched guitars. Their 5 track debut EP is entitled ‘Demo’ & it was recorded January 2015 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The EP opens with the pounding  – ‘And’. There is a strong power-pop influence running through the ‘Marble‘ sound. It’s only when you hear the full on wall of sound explode in your eardrums do you realise just how many influences are actually streaming through their impressive soundscapes. Name a band & I can guarantee you will hear it in their sound and that just goes to show the wealth of talent in their influential musical gene pool. This track is immense! An explosive opening track. Very impressive!

Track 2, ‘Lavender & Cherry’ is stuffed full of early shoegaze influences! I can hear Chapterhouse, MBV, For Against & Pale Saints all intertwining into a lush, immense, shoegaze fuelled maelstrom of beautiful sonic tones. A brilliant interlude from the full on, in your face explosion of the opening track, the chorus change in ‘Lavender & Cherry’ is simple breathtaking & worthy of praise on its own. You really need to check this track our for yourselves:

‘Slimy‘, the EP’s third track is nothing short of beautiful! Immense reverb drenched vocals introduce us to waves of sonically delightful guitars. This track will have you gazing at your shoes & dreaming your life away with its soothing tones. Its builds & builds to a massive ending, sweeping you away with its walls of  luscious guitars. A masterclass in this bands songwriting abilities, it is my favourite track on this release and yet again, another marvellous track from a very, very impressive band. Ones to watch for the future.

The longest track on this release, coming in at 4 Minutes and 30 Seconds, is ‘The Infinity Link’. Doing exactly as it says on the tin, this track is another shoegazing masterpiece. It’s guitar lines will transfix & mesmerise you until you fall into a sonic explosion of tone & shape. This is a monster of a track. Listen to it on headphones & wonder at it’s psychedelic qualities. Dreamy to a point, but immensely satisfying to this listener. Very impressive.

The final track on this really impressive release is ‘V’. Vocally ,this track will bowl you over. Hauntingly beautiful. The production qualities on them are amazing. Coupled with the explosive full on layers of reverb laden guitar lines & a solid drum track, this track is a fitting ending to a brilliant release. Easily making me want to hear more.

Its very difficult to find fault with this band. Musically, they have ability in spades! Their production techniques are second to none! But what stands out for me about them is their ability to introduce so many of the influences that they hold dear into their music.  If you need to hear something good this weekend then go and download this EP. It will entertain you!  If you are a fan of the Genre, it will blow you away! Newbies to the scene could do no wrong using ‘Marble‘ as a starting point in this new wave of gazing!  This EP is a masterpiece. I can’t wait to hear what they come up with next.
