Montreal band 'No Joy' are one of the genre's gems. Crafting intoxicating melodies, their dry wit and dark edges are a potent combination. 'Hare Tarot Lies' embodies this perfectly and is simply one of the best songs ever. So with all that in mind, I was pretty pleased to be asked to review their latest release, a short sharp shot of shoegaze. The EP 'Droolsucker' came out a few weeks back and travels from thunderous fury to mellifluous mellowness in just three tracks.
Drool Sucker by No Joy
They show off their deep, dark imaginations in 'A Thorn in Garlands Side' with ferocious guitars screaming, 'Xo (Adam's Getting Married)' is shades lighter in feel and sound, glimmering with a mischievous sense of humour. Closer 'Theme Song' is so melodious, with Jasamine and Laura’s vocals shimmering serenely.
'No Joy' are touring Europe in August with Poland, Germany and the UK on the list. Get out and see them.

'Sleepless' is eighteen minutes of driving psychedelic exploration that loops and arcs through layers of fuzzy experimental guitars, throbbing bass frequencies, those glorious synth licks and an intensely dark, rhythmic percussive repetition that collectively circumnavigates a hauntingly delicious hazy vocal line. Truly a work of art and bound to enthral your inner psych demon!

This latest single entitled 'Move' gets its official release on the 30th July 2016 via Hazy Dog Records and will be available to buy/download on Cassette, Digitally & on CD.
'Move' is an infectious slice of experimental psych-pop with addictive reverberating guitar parts, throbbing bass progressions, repetitive percussive hits and an instantly recognisable floating vocal that lazily meanders between the instrumentation with aplomb.

Primal Fav's - 'Dead Rabbits' have unleashed the stunning first single entitled 'Get Me Over There' from their highly anticipated forthcoming full length album 'Everything Is A Lie' penned in for release via the fantastic London based purveyors of all things sonically wonderful 'Fuzz Club Records' on September 5th 2016. These Southampton based neo-psych shoegazers have been wowing their fans with their musical talent having previously released two albums, 2013's awesome debut 'The Ticket That Exploded' and the brilliant 'Time Is Your Only Memory' back in 2014.
'Dead Rabbits' formed in 2011 and since then have been busy playing countless gigs and tours throughout the UK and Europe - appearing at Eindhoven Psych Lab, Common People, Cosmosis Festival and sharing the stage with the likes of Band of Skulls, Yuck, Night Beats, Crystal Stilts and The Telescopes. Later this year the band will be heading out on a huge EU tour with The Warlocks.
'Get Me Over There' rumbles and growls on a bed of fuzzy jangling guitars, swirling pulsating bass frequencies and skittish percussion as the howling vocals ride a raging sonic twister into the ether. One of the best tracks this year by far and most definitely recommended listening!

ARTIST: Jewish Mandiolo
RELEASE: Gustavinho Debaixo D'água
RELEASE DATE: 09/07/15
'The Jewish kings' are a new experimental post rock band from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil who specialize in experimental textures, flamboyant Latin grooves but with guitar effects that larry lalonde (Primus guitarist) would be wet for! The band are made up of Bernardo Arenari, Luiz Bento, Denisson Caminha, David Dinucci & Danilo Nagib.

In the first track 'Agua' we are exposed to almost too much coolness for a mans ears to take. The opening chords are vague, spacious and driving while the bass leans over and gives yer ears a wee sombre kiss coupled with a subtle whisper conveying its love for making you happy. This track goes in and out of dominent 6th chords that add such a strange resolution - resolution - resolution kind of feel to the progression as opposed to the usual tension - resolve setup of our tritonic Jazz forefathers. After our typical start the tracks middle section takes us to shoegaze land where we swallow a dose of some concotion off of the same shelf as 'Do Make Say Think's - Goodbye Enemy Airship or The Landlord Is Dead' album's of yore! Of course then it takes us into a combination of the two but with an added brass section...... and as the main songwriter in 'Tuath', I love me a brass section! The crescendo in this track is so expertly conveyed that you will wonder how this band are just on their first EP.

The third track 'Imersáo' has a shoegazey type of James Bond feel that you just gotta check out. You will not be able to prevent yourself from singing 'Live And Let Die' over the tune. This track has elements of 'Yo La Tengo' on vocals but with some of the same guitar textures of 'Conan Mockasins' debut album! While listening to it I was tempted to name drop 'Neutral Milk Hotel' in terms of the way his voice sounds. 'Imersáo' stinks of late 90's guitar 'Radiohead' but upon saying that it is still its own buzz! I reccomend experimenting with some 'Bucolic Remedies' before listening to this track. For absolutely no reason at the end of this song it blasts the distortion really loudly with some delicious unison bends. I am not sure weather this was a half assed ending or if they genuinely planned it to sound like this but either way I love it. Check it out:

'Amor LIquido' is by far the coolest track on this EP. The intro is in an odd groove and takes me back to 'Bad Moon Rising' in terms of guitar sound. The drum sound is grainy & the bass doesn't give a toss about frequency masking and then imagine that 'Sonic Youth' had the cop on to include a brass section? Because of course they incorporate some really tense but harmonic brass harmonies all the while incorporating some Rio De Janeiro musical stylings in the form of some claps. In my opinion this is an excellent thing to do as it completely melds the culture from which this band come with the music that they like. The Jazzy Latin flavors are bloody magic & they make me want to go and put some trad onto the next 'Tuath' record. Also I must add that unlike most experimental bands these dudes sing in their own language which again, as the main songwriter in 'Tuath' I think is a magic buzz altogether and they should be stamped for their bravery in the field.

'Merguhlar' is a song I am going to mention even though I didnt enjoy it for a contradictary reason: The first half of it is a story and it is in Portuguese & due to this it takes ages to get to the meat and potato's! This would not be a problem for me if I spoke Portuguese but I don't unfortunately. Anyways when it does kick off it is beautiful and contains some of the nicest shoegaze out there at the moment as it boasts some beautiful off kilter harmonies, the right amount of distortion and the panning techniques keep the sound interesting. Check this track out:

The EP's closer 'Foz (Debaixo D'água)' is a feel good, Jazzular & almost Funk effort that lands directly at a loud Post Punk mid section half way through the intro but with the anthemic shouting of a lot of modern Indie music. These guys really know how to progress their music in an intricate way and this song is a great example of that. This is by far my second favorite track on this EP. It's a lovely closer & a magic sign off for what is a short but great listening experience.

This band are great but I feel with a bit more experimentation they will be quite a force to be reckoned with. I doubt I will ever see this band live but I am a big fan of their sound.
I rate this 4 out of 5.

The enigmatic 'Lust' seem to have appeared from the ether. The Toronto four-piece played their first show in June and released their self-titled debut album in July. Fast work, or the fruition of months, years or decades of planning? Who knows. Their eight track debut creates a head-swirling atmosphere that’s only punctured fleetingly, as by a thunderstorm. The slow-ness and depth of sound, combined with the whisper of unsettlingly intense lyrics seems intended to hypnotise.
[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=3076696091 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small]
Opening track 'Calm' eases in with chorused guitars and sets the rhythm for the record, with its slow, deep breaths. Although the noise grows, the pace is steady – in and out. A tumult of textures and layers, 'Whisper' rouses us briefly, but 'Day Dream' sends us back to a reverie. It’s definitely dream pop, but they pile some dirt on too. Keeping it dreamy, 'You and I' casts a sonic hex which is shattered by 'Alone' – an energy boost of drums, distortion and wonderful whammy action. In 'Are These Feelings Real?' a recorded voice doubts their reality, and no wonder. This deep into Lust’s debut, disorientation is all. And that only deepens as 'Breathe' begins and seems somehow to be a continuation and evolution of the preceding song. It’s almost smothering – a long way from the airiness of Calm, all those songs ago. The album closes with 'When You’re Blue', with its swooping minor chords and whispered lyrics, it’s a dark incantation.
Lust have us under their spell.
A brand new track has surfaced by the brilliant Michigan based atmospheric electronic dreampop duo 'Voluptuous Panic' entitled 'Zyva' featuring production & mixing by Human Koala. Recorded in both Paris France & Grand Rapids Michigan the track itself is a shimmering reverb laden affair with beautiful vocals courtesy of the brilliant Gretchen DeVault swimming in Brian J. Bowe's hazy psychedelic guitars & bass with the added bonus of programmed beats & synths courtesy of Paris based Human Koala . It sounds to us like Voluptuous Panic' are back to their best & we cant wait to hear more from them as the summer rumbles on. Check it out:

ARTIST: Everyone But Me
RELEASE: Everyone But Me EP
RELEASE DATE: 16/05/15
RECORD COMPANY: Custom Made Music
As most people who read my reviews for ‘The Primal Music Blog’ would know it takes a hell of a lot to move me musically to the point that I take the time to write about it. I tend to be rather picky when it comes to a genre of music that Im passionate about. Shoegaze & Dreampop to me should (first & foremost) have the ability to move the listener beyond the normal realms of sonic bewilderment & in turn transport him or her to a higher plain where a multitude of reverb layered guitar textures intertwined with solid drum patterns, translucent vocal arrangements & throbbing bass lines assault your cranium with beautiful blissful tones full of emotive goodness! Or in lay mans terms - It needs to sound fucking immense! So with all of that in mind, allow me to introduce you to my new favourite band - ‘Everyone But Me’.
Hailing from Columbus, Ohio ‘Everyone But Me’ are no prudes when it comes to creating beautiful fuzzy dreamgazing soundscapes. Their self titled 5 track debut will attest to that. Released on 16th May 2015 via digital download on bandcamp & on tape via the brilliant ‘Custom Made Music’ this EP will catapult you into a world where gazing is king & emotive melodic chorus changes evoke the heady infantile early days of the first wave shoegaze era. The band are made up of duo Nick Bain & Jason Grady but their sound is insanely massive! It loops & arc’s all over the sonic palette with an intensity so big that will have you swimming in a golden hallucinogenic haze. Creatively astute & impressively imaginative ‘Everything But Me’ will attract even the lesser fans of the shoegazing / dreampop genre with this immense self titled debut EP.
[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=1276311271 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small]
The EP opens up with an absolutely amazing whirlwind of fuzzy reverb, layered synths, infectious vocals & programmed drums. ‘Isn’t Far’ is an impressive opener full of infectious looping sound waves leading to a soaring chorus that will tickle your spine as you are lifted up and carried along with its psychedelic overtones. Simply stunning!
[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1276311271 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1550521578]
Track 2 - ‘Say Farewell’ is a charging beast of a track reminiscent in parts to UK based shoegazers '93 Million Miles From The Sun’. This track is astonishing with its sprawling swirling synth patterns, delayed reverb induced vocal arrangements & pounding repetitive drum sequences. But for me its the melodic vocal charge in the chorus that is absolutely immense. The production on this track alone is stunning. Check it out:
[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1276311271 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1312846333]
‘Just Like Anyone’ is a full on sonically intense train ride to a land where reverb is a god given birth right. Its a swirling mass of droning guitars, sweeping drums & haunting vocals that will blow your mind. Again the chorus changes on this track are uplifting to the point of no return. This is another level of shoegazing. Truly a masterpiece!
[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1276311271 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=2767721902]
The beginnings of track 4 on this self titled EP from Ohio based ‘Everything But Me’ lead you into a false sense of security! Im not afraid to admit that. The opening salvo’s of 'I Never believed You’ distract you from the sonic assault that lurks in its shadowy underbelly! A wall of beautiful fuzzy reverberated sound hits you full on in the face & this listener is hooked all over again. So good!
[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1276311271 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=2827519832]
The final track on this impressive EP is 7 minutes plus of sonically delightful fuzzy sound waves. ‘Still Not Enough’ is a charging monolith of a track that is so addictively hallucinogenic at times that I had to press stop, then rewind & start it all over again just incase I missed something the first time around! The immense vocals are so intensely intertwined with swirling guitars, the ever present pounding drum pattern & layers upon layers of shimmering bloody brilliance that you can do nothing at all other that float along with it on a wave of amazing shoegaze. This is a track that just keeps giving! A triumphant ending to a absolutely beautiful EP.
[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1276311271 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=4178540558]
This debut 5 track EP from Ohio based dreamgaze duo ‘Everything But Me’ is a rare thing indeed. It's as rare as hens teeth! I can safely say right now that the Everything But Me EP will be in my top 5 EP’s of 2015 come years end without a doubt! It is simply stunning from its opening fuzzy chord progressions right through to its shimmering finality. It had me hooked from the very first note & I am so glad to have heard it.
Its one of those releases that I will continue to return to again & again. Magnificent!
