Ryan and Chris have been friend's for year's, moving in together after high school where they started writing subpar guitar pop songs. Ashley was discovered through his mother who worked with Ryan at a pub and heard Ryan playing music off his phone that she was used to hearing from Ashley's room, she knew he wanted to drum in a proper band. After a few month's of practicing and mucking around at Ashley's place, Alana was found from a music website after she recently moved to Melbourne looking for a band to join. Straight away it was obvious that she was an incredible singer and fit perfectly. The song's started pouring out, now fully formed and deemed good enough to show the public. First gig was played in September 2013 and since then there have been many more. There is a self-recorded and self-released single and now a full EP out as of November 2014.

Intenna was founded in November 2010 and is from Malang, Indonesia. The band members are Ni Nyoman Nanda Putri Lestari, Dwianto Prastowo, Ovan Zaihnudin, Pugud Haidi Agusdilla, and Henry Setyawan.  - " We are a band consisting of five member's from Malang, East Java, Indonesia. Ni Nyoman Nanda Putri Lestari as the only girl in the band takes the vocal duty, then Dwianto Prastowo and also Ovan Zaihnudin as guitarists, Pugud Haidi Agusdilla as bassist and the last one, the man behind all of us, Henry Setyawan as drummer. About the genre of our music, we cannot specify it, but according to Indonesian music site, WastedRockers. They wrote and call our music : "Intenna is like the crossover between slowcore, dreampop, lo-fi, space rock and drone rock, which is almost can be heard from the English band in 90's era, such as Flying Saucer Attack, Loveliescrushing, Jessamine, Movietone, Crescent and Amp." So maybe, it can be say, it's bit difficult to coup the texture of our music, right? Right now, we are working on our first album. The plan is that we can release it at the end of this year or maybe on early 2015. We already released a cassette record split album with fellow group Guttersnipe, under the Forthe Record label. This cassette already sold out since February 2014 where we contributed two singles titled Flowery and Thirst. We also have two singles more as demo that is, Dansa Hujan and Little Miss Sunshine which were recorded in 2010".

4) Slow Motion Picture - Opening

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1303714789 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=2475784986]

Slow Motion Picture’s debut 'In Memory Of…' is an album covered in layers of hidden meanings and buried references to characters its listeners will never actually meet, yet still takes its audience on a journey of pure empathy. Each of the album’s ten songs are based upon a ghost story that multi-instrumentalist/guitarist Brian Caesar (As Tall As Lions) wrote in his early twenties as a way to cope with the passing of his father. Filling each song with haunting vocal melodies, luscious orchestral accompaniment and endless layers of fuzz driven guitars, Caesar, along with former vocalist Lauren Edman (Sleepthief), developed a sound that blended the depth of modern film scores with an airy timbre reminiscent of the shoegaze bands of the early 90’s. Bringing in drummer Aaron Kelly, bassist Dan Timmons and keyboard/synth player Marco Talamo enabled Edman and Caesar to finally bring these songs to the stage in 2013. Performing under the name 'For Every Story Untold', the five-piece has played some of the most profound venues of New York and Brooklyn, generating significant buzz with their immense sound. They have opened for international touring acts, including a sold out performance with Susanne Sundfør and highly praised bands Owel, Color War and Salt Cathedral. The band recently added the heart-stopping voice of Scottish singer/multi-instrumentalist Anna Popplestone to its lineup and is looking forward to playing several dates in support of the new LP.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1732919363 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=4078815445]

Clustersun are into washy loud shoegazey reverberations, walls of sound, cold wave atmospheres, psychedelic journeys, and crystal clear dreamy melodies. They were formed in Catania, Italy, and have been making noise together since the beginning of 2013. Their first self-produced single “Be Vegetal”, was included in the CD Summer Sampler 2013, published by U.S. label Custom Made Music. They subsequently signed to Italian label Seahorse Recordings to release their debut album “Out Of Your Ego” in April 2013. The first single chosen from the album, “Hipgnosis”, reveals the band signature sound: hypnotic-obsessive bass lines, dark and cold drum patterns, strongly expressive guitar spanning from an ambient ethereal mood to fuzz-and-reverb madness, fat analog synths and dreamy melodies. Clustersun are Marco Chisari (vocals & bass), Mario Lo Faro (guitars), Piergiorgio Campione (synthesizers, keyboards & backing vocals), and Andrea Conti (drums).

6) Magao - Dive To The Sea

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1732919363 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1961910077]

Magao is a Japanese shoegaze fusion project based in the city of Chiba. This is the brainchild of Magao, who is 19 years old. He is an independent artist, not affiliated with any record label to date, other than participating in compilations. The most recent of these was by Canata Records. While this solo project began approximately 1 1/2 years ago, Magao also plays guitar in another band, called Soltyknown. Magao's sounds are reminiscent of Coaltar of the Deepers and Luna Sea, who he identifies as inspiration for his compositions.

a1607523493_2

Postpunk? Shoegaze ? Pop? Hermetic Delight aren’t afraid to play with aesthetics, embracing a singular identity. With the release of Heartbeat 12’’, in 2013, their last maxi single that splashed all over the blogosphere, the five members of Hermetic Delight have built up a solid following and are a band to keep an eye on.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=763847794 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=255325270]

Hailing from Modena, Italy, Rev Rev Rev’s sound is influenced by first-wave shoegaze, as well as psychedelic rock, re-metabolizing these elements into a loud, woozy, fuzz-driven context. Their live set's comprise kaleidoscopic video projection's waving with music, and the use of self-constructed stomp boxes, producing weird sound's. The band formed in the summer of 2011. The release of their debut EP "Hypnagogic Visions" the following year quickly caught the attention of independent webzines and radio stations across Italy. "Silent Siren" was included in the shoegaze compilation “Nothing Much to Lose”, alongside tracks from Ummagma, Panophonic, Panda Riot, Asàlto al Parque Zoologico, and Shi Shi. Their first LP (self-titled), featuring psychedelic artwork by Brock Lefferts, was released in October 2013 and met with a wave of positive feedback from press and webzines. Songs from this LP continue to be in rotation on many independent radio stations. The "Rev Rev Rev" LP ranked number 3 on the 2013 Shoegazer Alive Top 10, and was included in the ShoegazeMania Top Ten and several other 2013 charts. In summer 2014, the album was distributed through Japanese record stores. A digital single was released in October 2014 through WinWin Records, a new offshoot label of One Little Indian Records (iTunes link: smarturl.it/Rev-Rev-Rev-iTunes). Side A “Catching a Buzz” has been featured on Steve Lamacq's show on BBC 6 Radio and the accompanying video (youtu.be/_D1wD_5oPGk) premièred on Clash Music Magazine. Since September 2013, Rev Rev Rev have toured across Italy, Austria, Germany, Slovenia and the Czech Republic, as well as the UK, Switzerland and France in October 2014. More recently “Rev Rev Rev” was nominated as the best self-produced album by PIMI (Premio Italiano Musica Indipendente).

Robsongs is the solo project of Brazil’s Robson Gomes, which began back in 2008 under another name with friends Alex and Augusto Medeiros Vitorino. The Robsongs project (Brazil) began back in 2008, initially under the name Minha Vida Nunca Foi um Picnic (My Life Was Never a Picnic). After Alex’s premature death and several trials and tribulations, the group disbanded. Since that time, Robson maintained the spirit of this project as a solo artist, recording music in his home studio. Robson began to compose new songs with something relevant to say through his music and lyrics, meticulously producing and arranging them. Thus was born the Robsongs project. These songs are dedicated to Alex Vitorino, who began this all with Robson so many years ago and left this planet too soon – his spirit lives on through this project. In parallel, Robson is the lead singer-guitarist in Brazil’s renowned indie rock group The Concept, which just celebrated 20 years since its foundation and were slated to play with such headlining bands as Ringo Deathstarr and The Telescopes. He is also the guitarist in reggae band Banda Damata. Taken together, Robsongs’ music shows distinct similarities to the likes of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Black Market Karma, The Doors, Happy Mondays, Dead Horse One, Spacemen 3, The Koolaid Electric Company, Kingdom of the Holy Sun and some of The Beatles’ more experimental works. Robsongs is signed to The Blog That Celebrates Itself Records and has already released 3 EPs and numerous singles through this label over the past two years, as well as participating in various compilations.

EP REVIEW: Lunar Twin - Lunar Twin

a0690340269_2

Artist: Lunar Twin

Release Name: Lunar Twin EP

Record Company: Unsigned

Released: 10/11/14

Music today is filled with many contradiction's. Everyone want's to start a band or a project just to create music that'll sound a lot like this genre or that genre, but with their own twist & their own unique edge, armed with the heartwarming intention of putting themselves out there to get noticed & to stand out from their peer's. More often than not they fail miserably and end up becoming a carbon copy of their influence's only to crash and burn, not only on the modern day musical highway's that swirl around the globe, but also in the eye's of their ever watching & ever knowing peer's. In my opinion this is down to a few major failing's. Firstly, a failing to understand their musical surrounding's, coupled with not knowing their limit's as a working band, and secondly, failing whilst trying desperately to stay relevant & true to a musical belief that they hold dear! They board themselves up in home studio's overthinking a concept and then walk around with a monkey on their back trying their damnedest to sound different! Now, fast forward, let's move on 6 month's to the impending implosion! This is where a slow musical death ensues or to put it bluntly, death by overthinking! Music should not be difficult. It should come from the heart and mean something at the same time. It shouldn't be about genre's, style's or trend's! And it shouldn't be forced. These things are not rocket science? Are they?

Lunar Twin are a Los Angeles based electronic dreamwave duo specialising in twisting numerous different musical genre's into something rather special. Their knowledge and understanding of their influence's keep's them ahead of their peer's, therefore avoiding the pitfall's of this  modern day musical landscape, whilst sounding completely different to anything else out there today. What they have achieved is a very difficult thing to do & I know this myself, because it's something that we have tried to do with my own band, Analogue Wave. In some way's 'Lunar Twin' remind me a lot of Analogue Wave. You can't pigeon hole them into one particular genre. Their influence's vary, from New Wave (Joy Division & Gary Numan) to Hip Hop (Nas,Wu Tang Clan), through classic psychedelica (13th Floor Elevators) to modern downtempo stuff (Massive Attack, Portishead, Thievery Corporation, Soulsavers); and from classic and modern songwriter's like Billie Holliday, Leonard Cohen, Rodriguez and Santogold. They blend their musical and lyrical influence's together to make a modern psychedelic and cinematic sound.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=2141485895 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small]

The 'Lunar Twin EP' open's up with beautiful 'Sirens'. The sound of wave's crashing on a beach, intertwined with hazy reverb drenched guitar's announce Bryce Boudreau's addictive vocal's & that 80's influenced synth line that seem's to hold the track steady to it's downtempo origin's. It's a great introduction track for anyone new to the sound of  'Lunar Twin'. It's filled with pulse's of New Wave, Dream Pop & Psychedelica with an almost Bluesy vocal line. Check it out below:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=2141485895 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=658023677]

'Champagne', the EP's second track, is hauntingly beautiful, reminiscent of late Pink Floyd in part's, intertwining with that ever present 80's synth sound. You can hear the Hip Hop & Gothic influences here too with subtle Dream-Pop flourishes swirling around another stunning vocal. I really like the use of addictive sample's running just under the vocal track. They keep your attention focused on the track and they also accompany the ocean references in the lyric's, which really hit home with the way the track ebb's & flow's. Check it out:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=2141485895 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3928818155]

'Metroplex' bring's the bands's 80's influences to the fore with sequenced drum's, synth line's & pulsing vocal's! The Gary Numan'esque synth style mixed with Kraftwerk's drive compliment Byrce Boudreau's vocal's with ease. They flow gracefully over the entire track. You can hear the production techniques clearly. You can also really understand the inner working's of 'Lunar Twin' when listening to it. The band seem's to be at home with this particular genre of music. It's not forced or contrived in any way. It's great track & one that I'd say any remixer worth his/her salt would love to get their hands on. Check it out below:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=2141485895 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1076016436]

The closing track on the 'Lunar Twin EP' is probably my favourite. 'Cruel water' creeps along like a stalking animal. It's a modern day masterpiece with it's effected guitar's, Hip Hop styled drumbeat (keeping the pace just nice), addictive sample's & synth's swirling underneath, all cradling Bryce's 'in your face' vocal like a newborn baby! It's a little piece of creeping dirtiness on an otherwise nice EP. Don't take my word for it, check it out below:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=2141485895 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1324276198]

'Lunar Twin' are Christopher Murphy (production/music) and Bryce Boudreau (vocals/co-production). They met in July 2011, at the Denver Underground Music Festival when Bryce joined as a guest of Chris’ previous gothic synth band Nightsweats. They formed Lunar Twin in October 2013, and derived the band’s name from a theory about earth having possibly had a twin moon. They released the stunning 4 track 'Lunar Twin EP' to the masses on the 10th November 2014. As you can tell from the band’s name, the members have an interest in space- and time theories. They draw inspiration from Einstein’s Twin Paradox and Theory of Relativity. What it means for man(kind)’s place in the universe is reflected in their lyrics. Other sources for their lyrical themes are nature (the ocean, wilderness, landscapes) and culture (both ancient and modern, e.g. mega cities).

What is remarkable is that the two band members record the music and vocal separately, on locations far apart (Hawaii and Salt Lake City). 'Lunar Twin' are currently working on new material for an upcoming LP.

EP REVIEW: We Came From The North - 'Low Sun, Long Shadow'

a1216204427_2

We Came From The North are a Scottish post-rock four piece who's sound display's a crisp interpretation of this genre's formula! Their most recent EP is called 'Low Sun, Long Shadow' and it give's you an excellent example of 'We Came From The North's' near mastery of their skill's.Their sound is a tight example of a band who've got a solid and melodic backbone which allow's the guitarist to pivot and run into flourishes of beautiful solo's that make this genre so appealing. They also give us sparkle's of diversity and originality and outright talent in a genre that has concrete wall's as guideline's, just to keep us coming back to listen again, repeatedly!

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=3417638039 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small]

The album opens with the all too brief  'We Grew Old Too Soon' which get's off to a gentle start and show's the band's skill off well enough without giving away too many surprise's too early on in this impressive EP. 'Low Sun, Long Shadow' isn't all front, it take's it's time in unveiling its many twist's and give's the music sufficient room to move and breathe, reaching peak's of utter brilliant noise & never short of a melody before resting quietly on a close up detailed rhythm with gently worked guitar delay delighting your ear's!

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3417638039 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=900142707]

The second track, 'Listening Post' beginning's has classic element's of post-rock building from an elegant gentle intro and hook into a beautifully driven melodic piece before unleashing the full force of it's power while still being poised and graceful. Everything keep's it's shape here, there's no frenzied white noise to induce paralysis on 'Listening Post', but instead a brilliantly executed piece of post-rock goodness that surges to it's height's of power and dovetail's back toward's serenity before flying higher and louder again into it's final crescendo .

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3417638039 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=2362040664]

'Model Home For A Nuclear Village' is a different beast altogether!  While it still adhere's to a post-rock ethos, the dirtier fuzz bass and driving beat are brought to the foreground a little more on this fine track which set's 'We Came From The North' a little bit apart from many band's in this already burgeoning genre. This give's the impression that they have a much more to offer in term's of originality and longevity.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3417638039 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=4289326820]

The next track, 'There Is No Such Thing As A Friendly Ghost', is simply beautiful and show's yet more strength to 'Low Sun, Long Shadow'. It is both delicate and destructive! It's detailed quieter moment's are joyous and there's a hint of Animal's era Pink Floyd bass riff's which bring an interesting twist to the middle of the track.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3417638039 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=2836783606]

'Secret Piñata Party' is the closing piece to 'Low Sun, Long Shadow' and shred's it to the core. Whilst the track still showcase's then band's impressive ear for a melody and expert knowledge of building towards brilliant peaks! The finale of 'Secret Piñata Party' pin's your ears back and puts you in a force ten gale of distorted guitar's and attacking drums, with a filthy bass line steering directly toward's you as the guitar's wash over them like a giant wave! Check it out below -

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3417638039 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3216012925]

'We Came From The North' are an impressive Scottish post-rock band who seem to prefer to leave the glitchy sound's of the delicate moments of 'This Will Destroy You' in favour of allowing their ability as musician's take centre stage. They have a truly impressive sound that's both melody driven and as powerful as it come's, while keeping a tight hold on song structure! They don't fall into phases of noise and chaos but drive hard toward's powerful and moving hardcore music that stand's up to repeated hearing. The famous author and fellow Scot 'Ian Rankin' has declared himself a fan of the genre via Twitter by continually supporting bands like Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky, he's also known for supporting Scottish bands in particular. Perhaps 'We Came From The North' could benefit from contacting him?, if they haven't already? There's a distinct possibility that 'We Came From The North's' impressive force would catch his well tuned ear.

Since releasing 'Low Sun, Long Shadow', 'We Came From The North' have also brought out a new track called 'Galena' .

Del Chaney - The Primal Music Blog - January 2015 - Dublin, Ireland.

Below is the first 10 band's from this epic compilation with link's to their music & information on each band:

1) Duelectrum - She Doesn't Feel The Sun.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1732919363 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=2715668702]

A truly epic compilation needed a truly epic opening act. Duelectrum are a shoegaze/noise pop band from São Paulo, Brazil, formed by Filipe Albuquerque (guitars), Franklin Weise (bass) and Elson Barbosa (drums), who also plays bass guitar in the super indie post-rock group Herod. As a duo (Filipe e Franklin), Duelectrum independently released the "Duelectr1" EP in 2001, which is now out of print. The "Electrolândia" EP was released in 2008 by Pisces Records and Sinewave. Sinewave released the "Tempestadestelar" EP, which contains songs recorded between 2002 and 2005, in 2002, as well as the single "Chocolate Love" in 2008. In August 2014, the band released "She Doesn't Feel the Sun" (EP), with a guest appearance by Lucas Lippaus (Herod, Hopping to Collide With, S.O.M.A.) on guitars. Track one on this release, 'She Doesn't Feel The sun', is a mind-blowing maelstrom of sound that captivates you from the very beginning! It open's the door to this compilation & leads you by the hand through an immense amount of amazing music.

2) Trementina - Hazy Youth

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1732919363 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3012686180]

Trementina started as an idea in a small rainy town in a small unknown country (Chile). Cristobal (guitar) wanted to create something new, something that had never been seen there, so he began searching for this new sound, making a post-punk band together with his friend Lucas (bass guitar) and some childhood friends. Nevertheless, the style didn't fulfill them. They wanted to make something fresh, with some old twisted shoegaze freedom. So they left their mind open and started to make some noise with those pedals. But something was missing – they were lacking a lead singer. Playing this kind of craziness required a female voice to sweeten this music, so they asked Vanessa (vocals and guitar) to join them. One day Vanessa went to Cristobal's house feeling really sick due to turpentine poisoning. She was an arts student, so she always was complaining about the nausea that comes with hours of painting. Cristobal was curious about the name "trementina", as it’s a pretty name and a beautiful concept. Turpentine (Trementina) it's something used to make art, but also to erase it and start over, it was perfect. After they recorded a few songs in Cristobal's home studio, Soundcloud brought their sound all over the world – to fans, radio, magazines and blogs. It also led to them releasing their first self-recorded EP through Japanese label Vinyl Junkies.

3) Sounds of Sputnik - Overdrive feat. Ummagma

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1732919363 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3716870002]

Sounds of Sputnik is a project spearheaded by Roma Kalitkin, whose signature sound mixes post-rock, shoegaze and dream pop with a slight kickback to noise pop. He draws inspiration from My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Sonic Youth, Happy Mondays, and Slowdive. Dubbing himself a “white crow”, the music he makes has always gone against trends within his home country of Russia, both as a solo artist and for the 20 years he played in various post-punk, alternative and shoegaze bands. Sounds of Sputnik released his debut album "New Born" on Ear to Ear Records (UK) on November 21, 2014. Sounds of Sputnik has grabbed the attention of numerous celebrated people, who became involved in this album, including Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver, Brian Jonestown Massacre), Malcolm Holmes (OMD), Fran Ashcroft (Damon Albarn, Lords of Acid), and Ummagma, who co-wrote, co-produced and performed on this album. Sounds of Sputnik also received a top prize at the 2014 Jagermeister Russian Indie Music Awards in the 'Young Blood' nomination category, as well as one for Best East European Video at the 2014 Australian Independent Music Video Awards. We reviewed Sounds of Sputnik's debut album for The Primal Music Blog and you can read what we though of it HERE.

4) Sharesprings - Maydear

a2172667700_2

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1732919363 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3321005539]

Sharesprings is a fascinating twee shoegaze indie pop band from Jakarta, Indonesia, which was founded in 2006. The band are made up of Ardhi Yudho - vocal, guitar, Rusli Budianto - drums, Putriani Mulyadi - vocal, guitar, Yanu Fuadi - bass. They have strong influences ranging from My Bloody Valentine to the Ecstasy and Wine's era, Yo La Tengo, and Eternal. The band is rooted in the element of late 80's and early 90's music. With a simple structure, the indie pop concept combines with the shoegaze style and noisy atmosphere backdrop. In February 2014, they released a split-single with The Wellington on Heyho! Records. The band formed as a trio in the middle of this decade and produced the demo ‘It’s Just Noise And Pop’, followed by their first official single in 2010 with ‘I Love To See You (Daydreaming Me)‘.

"They cross the classic shoegazing sound of the late 80's with the jangly guitar-pop style of bands on Sarah Records. The result is a twee-pop music that is cool, but surrounded by noise distortion and feedback that are rough and based on raw guitar"  - (Wastedrockers.wordpress.com)

5) Thud - Lime

a1351274524_2

Five weirdos got together in the winter of 2012. In the very early days of this band, there were only three people and they were Wang on bass, Wai on drums and Andy on guitar. Wang and Wai, who founded the band, are also brothers. After trying hard to find a one more person to join, at last, Andy found his classmate Kim, followed by Sky on guitar. Although each of the band members has different musical preferences and backgrounds, they all get along well and manage to create rather fine dreamy music together. While Thud have yet to deliver their first official release, they have already got the attention of NME, Sounds Better With Reverb and Drowned in Sound. In the words of Dom Gourlay of Drowned in Sound: "Self-confessed Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine obsessives Thud are something of an anomaly where the Hong Kong music scene is concerned. While many of their contemporaries take the traditional cantopop route, they can be heard conjuring up experimental pieces such as recent single 'Lime', which carries an ethereal grace in a similar vein to Seefeel or Moonshake back in the day."

6) //orangenoise - Puking Rainbows

Orangenoise

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=556350486 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3235665617]

Loud guitars, ambiguous vocals and driving rhythms are the crux of the //orangenoise sound. //Orangenoise are: Guitars and Vocals by Talha Asim Wynne , Synth and Keys by Faizan Riedinger and Talha Asim Wynne , Bass by Daniel Arthur Panjwaneey & Drums by Danial Hyatt. Formed in early 2010, the band members' varied musical backgrounds create a saturated mix of electronic, garage and psychedelia straight from the dense heat of Karachi, Pakistan. Taking their cues from shoegaze and 60's psychedelia, the band washes out the senses with their textured rhythms, while the mind floats freely with catchy hooks embedded deep into their airy vocals. Simply put, //orangenoise is an old machine from the past, modded for the present.

Ummagma began in Moscow in 2003 and have been living between Ukraine and Canada since then. They finally released two LP's (Ummagma & Antigravity) in 2012 and more recently released the single 'Rotation' and the 'Lama' and 'Kiev Remixes' LP's on Emerald & Doreen Recording's. They also produced, co-wrote and performed on Sounds of Sputnik's debut album 'New Born', released on UK boutique label Ear to Ear Record's in November 2014. Ummagma has had a full-page feature in Rolling Stone Russia, has won Alternative Eurovision competitions for 2 years in a row (Amazing Radio & Pure 107.8 FM), and has received 4 awards at the 2013 and 2014 Independent Music Video Awards. In 2013, Ummagma was declared “Band of the Year” in the blog Shoegaze Love. Ummagma has also caught the attention of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Malcolm Holmes (OMD), who have remixed tracks for release on Ear to Ear Records in late spring 2015.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1732919363 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1363289098]

Three people fell in love over noisy soundscapes and purple stars. Influenced by too many coffee and cigarettes while listening to My Bloody Valentine Vinyls in the dark they put together fuzzy reverb guitars with punk rock attitude. Jaguwar are: Guitar & Vocals: Lemmy Noize, Bass & Vocal's & Lyric's: Oyèmi Noize, Drums: Arian Mauksch.  In June 2014 the first EP 'I' came out to show the world how sugar noise can be. It was released on June 13, 2014 via Pinmusik - Pretty In Noise Netlabel.

9) Stella Diana - Isabeau

Stella Diana

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3508741970 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=2925150699]

"Stella Diana were formed in Naples in 1998. They are one of the few bands in Italy offering a blend of shoegaze with new wave and post-punk. They have firmly found their sound somewhere between Ride, Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive and The Chameleons... After releasing ‘Supporto Colore’ (2007) and ‘Gemini’ (2011), which were well received by music critics, they toured around Italy several times and also abroad. In 2014, they released the LP ‘41. 61. 93’, representing a perfect synthesis of distorted guitars and dilated sounds. The song ‘Isabeau’ was inspired by the character of Isabeau d'Anjou, the character from the 1990s film Ladyhawke, starring Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. “Stella Diana have produced a record that sounds like shoegaze no one had ever done in Italy"  - (Rock.it)

“Gemini is a great album, not only because it is very difficult to find another shoegaze band in Italy so compelling, but also because they manage to perfectly blend with the concept (dream) pop, walls of distortion and the Italian language. It is virtually impossible to find another band like them in Italy"  - (indieforbunnies.it)

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1732919363 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3084928016]

Lights That Change are a shoegaze, dreampop, ethereal wave project that renowned British producer Marc Joy began years ago. It represents a culmination of his many years producing, engineering, and mastering artists from a broad range of genres, as well as his own solo and collaborative creative endeavours. This is an initiative to get back to why he began a career in music in the first place, looking for the perfect dreamscape sonic horizon, created primarily on the basis of guitars. This project is envisioned in a similar format to This Mortal Coil, for instance - a colourful revolving door of collaborators, with Marc as the foundation. Musician Lisa Von H contributed vocals for the Lights That Change EP and Beautiful Soul single, as well as tracks on the Rainbow On Your Shoulder EP. The latter two were released through Ear to Ear Records. More recently, Lights That Change have been working with numerous other collaborators, including Malcolm Holmes of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD). The result of these new developments shall be revealed on Lights That Change's debut album, which is due early 2015.

The Morelings - 'No Sign' - An Introduction

a4272981280_2

In the ever evolving search for new music, I sometime's come across release's by different band's from all over the world that come straight out of left-field and take me by surprise. One such band have created a blissful, thought provoking, whirlwind of sound on their 3 track debut release that is simply immense! Philadelphia based 'The Morelings' have re-created that late 80's post-punk & dream-pop infused shoegaze sound that hark's back to oldschool musical stalwarts such as The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Secret Shine & For Against, with relative ease. With stunning vocal arrangements sitting on top of epic wall's of effected guitar's, throbbing bass line's and solid drum's, 'The Morelings' are another blissfully brilliant band to emerge from the already amazing underground Philadelphia based post-punk/shoegazing scene.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=900378909 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small]

'The Morelings' are: bassist & vocalist Kedra Caroline, guitarist Matthew William and percussionist Chris Jordan. They released their stunning debut 'No Sign' to the masses on January 8th 2015.

The bands press release read's - "No Sign promises fifteen minutes of ethereal vocals, spacious gazey guitar, and intoxicating rhythms. The opening track, “Less,” both floats and drives with dream pop hooks, while the bass saturated 2nd track, “Too Far,” oscillating from washy chaos to arresting order, hypnotically defies formula. The title track, “No Sign,” explores the best of both of these worlds, as it juxtaposes The Morelings’ melodic sensibility with trip-hop bass lines, minimalist jazz-like drumming, soaring melodies, and chorus-drenched baroque guitar lines, reaching an almost cinematic sound". It's not wrong!

The 'No Sign' open's with the the amazing 'Less'. Possibly my favourite track on this epic release. This track will have you floating on a wave of sonic goodness from it's opening note. What instantly hit's you from the off is the band's ability to take you by the hand and bring you back in time. With a traditional post-punk sound, glistening with beautiful dream-pop hook's, 'Less' opens up into a maelstrom of guitar's and explodes into that absolutely addictive chorus break. The bass line's on this song are intricate and the drum track keep's the whole show firmly moored to the ground, allowing Kedra's immense vocal's to soar high above the guitar's. This is a stunning track with shoegaze flourishes just touching the tips of it's wings. Check it out below -

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=900378909 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1838980986]

The second track on 'No Sign' is called  'Too Far'. It open's with a haunting guitar line from Matt Kearis, and yes, I can hear subtle influence's from 'The Cure', but also an almost 'Cocteau Twins' like vocal melody, courtesy of Kedra Kearis, float's into the mix and takes this track in another direction altogether. Kendra's vocal arrangement's caress your eardrum's with their ethereal beauty. This is another stunning track that will have you struggling to stay earthbound. You'll feel the urge to float with it's addictive melody & shoegaze infused cinematic soundscape's. Check it out below -

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=900378909 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1982955274]

The closing track on this stunning debut from Philadelphia based 'The Morelings' is called 'No Sign'. This is another shining example of a band in tune with their influence's. It's a polished track that compliment's the production on this whole release brilliantly. The guitar line's are clean, crisp and swirl around the track with aplomb. The bass line alone should be singled out for praise and the solid drum track keep's this maelstrom of sound grounded throughout. 'The Morelings' have really captivated me with their music. I love how they tap into the sub-conscience of their listener's with the vocal arrangement's on this track alone. Kendra's vocal's are simply stunning!  Leaving all the post punk / dreampop reference's aside, and it's probably a contentious influence to mention, but the one band that I can hear throughout this final track is 'Slowdive'. I can hear early 'Slowdive' all over it, and for me, it's testament to how good this band are & to how good this release as a whole really is. Check it out below -

ALBUM REVIEW | The Virgance - Hiko Shrine.

a2226498116_2

Artist: The Virgance

Release Date: 26/01/2015

Record Label: El Vals del Conejo

'The Virgance' is the solo project of UK based Nathan Smith, previously of seminal 90's band Ripley & 00's electro noise merchants 'Loveless'. 'Hiko Shrine' is his second album to be released on the brilliant Independent Netlabel 'El Vals del Conejo' & it follow's on from his 2014 debut 'Lost Continent'. Specialising in writing & producing spectacular instrumental soundscape's via the medium of shoegaze, dreampop, noise-rock & post-punk on your own is not an easy thing these day's! You have to be a master of a certain type of craft to undertake a mammoth project like this. What Nathan Smith aka 'The Virgance' has achieved, in not only this release, but in his magnificent 2014 debut release 'Lost Continent' is nothing short of genius! His attention to detail is immense! With swirling, looping, & arching reverb drenched wall's of guitar leading the charge through an effortless, almost cinematic-like, soundscape of haunting vocal line's, thriving drum's & hypnotic bass line's, the experimental track's on 'Hiko Shrine' are just stunning to listen to. You really have to listen to this album via headphones to experience the absolute feeling of weightlessness & zero gravity!  'Hiko Shrine' is why I love this genre of music so much. It epitomise's & embodie's what I believe this modern day, next wave of shoegazing is all about. This is the next level. This is Post-Gaze!

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=3424888616 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small]

With almost creeping intent, the album's explosive opening track 'Propulsion Lab Part 1' enter's the musical atmosphere like a steam train. This track is absolutely stunning! It takes you to place's you could only dream of. Layer's of effected guitar's loop around your cranium, carefully caressing your eardrum's with reverb induced hallucinogenic's as your led skyward's to some imaginary planet where shoegaze is king! This is one of my favourite track's of this year so far, and I know this year is yet young, but I reckon this album will be hanging around my top 5's of 2015, come year's end, it is that bloody good. But please, don't take my word for it, go and check it out below -

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3424888616 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=368627559]

You could press play on any one of the track's on this immense album and instantly get lost daydreaming your way through it's epic soundscape's. From the extremely addictive 'Mobius Strip' straight through to, my second favourite track on 'Hiko Shrine', 'Breitling Orbiter' and on into 'Airsick, Freon Presence, Interceptors, Propulsion Lab Part 2, Eros & Astraeus' and the album's closing track 'Slingshot', this album is  breathtakingly immense. It's wall's of sound will entice you in and lead you through numerous level's of post-punk & dream-pop infused gaze whilst propelling you into the heaven's. It's a roller coaster of sound wave's and sonic pulse's, ethereal vocal line's, pounding drum's, throbbing baseline's & looping guitar swell's. 'Hiko Shrine' is a wondrous thing. It is hard to believe that this maelstrom of epic sound's were written & produced by just one person? What Nathan Smith has achieved is amazing and I congratulate him on releasing a kraken.  I'd be very surprised if 'Hiko Shrine' doesn't top end of year poll's right across the board  this year, due to how immaculate it sound's. This is an epic musical masterpiece and one that I shall listen to for a long time to come!

EP REVIEW: Bloodhounds On My Trail - Escape EP

a2167526896_2

Over the past few years the Australian shoegazing scene has produced an amazing wealth of talent, spanning every corner of it's awe inspiring continent. From Sydney to Adelaide, Perth to Brisbane, we all know that 'the scene that celebrates itself ' is alive and well in Australia. But there is one city that stands out from all others! It seems to me that every single Australian based shoegaze band that I have come across these days hail's from this city alone! To me, Melbourne has produced some of the best post-punk, noise-rock & shoegaze infused artists over the past 24 months than any other city that I can think of. Bands such as Contrast, VHS Dream, Hideous Towns, Flyying Colours, Lunaire, Glaciers & Luna Ghost have created some amazingly beautiful blissed out tracks that I have played religiously on my online radio show 'The Primal Radio Show' for Radioactive//Underground.

But there is one Melbourne based band, that to me, epitomises a 60's fuzzy psychedelic sound & not only connects 80's atmospheric post-punk to early 90's gaze but who also adds a modern edge to their sound to create an addictive, reverb soaked, maelstrom of layered effects and beautiful melodies that would grace any soundtrack to a modern day musical audience. That band are  - 'Bloodhounds On My Trail'.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=3015720387 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=false artwork=small]

Reading the bands intro up on their Bandcamp page instantly sold me to their musical ideas -  'A love of shoegaze bands of the late 1980's to early 90's provided the catalyst for the formation of the band. Since then, members Johnny Green (guitar, vocals), Chris Donaldson (guitar), Jonny O’Hara (bass) and Nik Donaldson (drums) have sought to fuse the rhythmic underpinnings of bands like the Velvet Underground and the Stooges with the dream haze of Cocteau Twins and Slowdive'.

Released on the 14th October 2014, Engineered by Matt Hosking & Mixed by Rob Long at Birdland Studios & Los Bomberos, Escape is another of those EP's that has come straight out of left field and completely captivated me from the very first listen! I am instantly a fan of this band's sound. I spent my teenage years listening to some of the sounds that influence Bloodhounds On My Trail, such as Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, Ride, Jesus & Mary Chain, Stooges, MC5 & The Velvet Underground. I can hear every single one of those influential bands on this EP and that, for me, is a special thing! It's a really special thing in todays new wave of shoegaze!

The EP kicks off with the stunning 'Old Fools'. This is the doorway into a world where dreams are collected and played back via the medium of shoegazing! The intro to this song alone will send shivers down your spine and leave you floating in ethereal space. It is 5 minutes 36 seconds of beautiful, blissed out sounds that hit you in waves with their thundering drums and thriving bass lines! The guitar's alone on this track remind me of a Cheetah stalking it's prey! They swirl around the tracks moving parts with menace and pounce with speed when the immense vocal arrangements fall away & let the guitars dictate the space! This track will force the breath from your lungs it is that intense! But please, don't take my word for it. Go and check it out for yourself -

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3015720387 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 track=820304492]

'Dreamless', the second track on Bloodhounds On My Trail's impressive debut EP, takes your hand and guides you through a blissful soundscape of shoegaze. It open's up into another stunning track and I'm starting to think that this band alone will cross divides and open the genre of shoegazing and its many sub-cultures up to a wider audience. This is yet another beautiful track with a wall of sound that evokes an ethereal almost dreamlike feeling. I love it when a band can unlock feelings from it's listeners or when the music that a band creates can tap into a feeling & force you to remember good times! Bloodhounds On My Trail have a knack of teasing out memories, but in a good way!

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3015720387 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 track=4228110280]

Track 3, 'Jolly', is a shoegaze traditionalist's wet dream!  This track could have been plucked from 1989/1990. It's the closest track that I have heard resembling anything from that era in this modern day shoegazing world. It is stunningly beautiful. This is shoegazing on a cinematic scale. Swirling guitars blended with that amazing bass sound, those steady drums & Johnny Green's infectious vocals make this track a 'Stand Out' track for me and one that every single fan of the shoegaze genre of music should have on repeat. This should be the 'go to' track for future shoegaze fans. To have mastered a sound so infectious on a debut EP deserves major props to Bloodhounds On My Trail. I doubt even the inner sanctum of shoegaze aficionados would disagree with me when I say - " This is shoegaze! "

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3015720387 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 track=3124250885]

A soothing intro heralds the angelic arrival of the closing track on the already impressive 4 track EP. 'Silence, It's Golden' is yet another shining example of pure unhinged shoegaze! The wall of layered guitars  & effected vocals hits you like a steam train. The chorus on this track is absolutely stunning with its addictive chord change, pounding drums and immense vocal all sitting on top of a steady beat. This is a fitting end, to what I believe, is a game changer for fans of the shoegaze genre. This is one hell of a release!  Check it out below -

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3015720387 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 track=1944583511]

This listener is captivated by the sounds that Bloodhounds On My Trail achieve on this EP. The song structures and musicianship are second to none! The 'Escape EP' catapults you into a dream where gravity holds no sway! You float with ease on a sonic wall of reverb infused guitars, pulsating bass lines & amazing vocal tones. It's an immensely beautiful, sleek body of work with clean lines and wonderful arrangements. This EP is an out of body experience that I will continue to tap into again & again & again.

An introduction to | Revolution: The Shoegaze Revival Compilation - Raphalite Records & Gerpfast Kolektif

12088371_538524489645769_6283969569744812646_n

Artist Name: Revolution - A Shoegaze Revival ( Compilation )

Release Date: 11/02/15

Record Company: Raphalite Records & Gerpfast Kolektif Records

I once read a quote -  "After reaching it's apotheosis with My Bloody Valentine's 1991 masterpiece, Loveless, shoegaze petered out quickly, although numerous bands have tried to keep the dense, sense-pommeling sound alive since then, with varying degrees of success". - To me shoegaze never died. It simply went underground, far away from the prying eyes of the mass media hounds and the unrelenting record corporations looking for a fast buck! It's vibrant sound continued to cross divides and break borders all around the globe, drifting by us in waves. Every once in a while it popped it's head up to take a peek at this modern day musical landscape, before quickly retreating, back under the radar, waiting for it's chance to explode once again. This scene, once dubbed introverted, bubbled under the musical surface and gradually gained the attention of new ears in bedrooms and garages all over the world. Young teenage kids listening to the first generation of shoegaze gathered their friends together to start bands & collectives just to recreate it's atmospheric post-punk & droning psychedelic sound! This spark, in turn, lit the fuse thus leading to a burgeoning underground scene erupting onto a musical landscape that had been crying out for something different to cling to. The band's of today's are the next wave. They have studied their craft and in some case's created a completely new subculture in a genre of music that is traditionally a hard thing to penetrate. It's bizarre to think that shoegazing, considered the wimpiest of all the 90's musical scenes, is now thriving in a post -Pitchfork world!

Now Raphalite Records & Indonesian label Gerpfast Kolektif have brought together a selection of these 'Next Wave' shoegaze & dream pop artists, from all around the globe, for one free compilation release. What they have collectively achieved will cement this underground shoegaze scene into history and give the next generation of gazers something to reference when they in turn gather themselves to create their own wave of shoegaze. I am pleased to announce The Primal Music Blog's complete support of this epic shoegaze compilation by Raphalite Records & Indonesian label Gerpfast Kolektif and I fully intend to support as many of the artists on it as is feasibly possible.

"We are shoegaze; Look at your fucking shoes!"

This is not a shoegaze tribute album to MBV or Slowdive, or even The Beatles. There is simply so much greatness to the new wave of shoegaze that we’re focusing on original tracks, which showcase the immense talent of the featured bands. For some, this album may be the best shoegaze soundtrack they’ll encounter in 2015. At minimum, this will serve as a fantastic introduction to these new sounds and happily tide existing shoegaze fans over for quite some time.

This compilation will help move this genre beyond being “The Scene That Celebrates Itself” to one that is also celebrated by others...

Featured bands: //orangenoise (Pakistan), Sounds of Sputnik (Russia), The Yours (Hong Kong), Trementina (Chile), Ummagma (Canada-Ukraine, Digilite (Indonesia), Jaguwar (Germany), Stellarscope (USA), Spool (Japan), Wozniak (Scotland), Ether Feels (Japan), Hideous Towns (Australia), Lights That Change (Wales, UK) ,Damascus (Indonesia), Weird. EP REVIEW: Great Black Night - The Smoke Is Rising

a2584238137_2

It's not very often that I get the chance to review American based bands/artists for 'The Primal Music Blog'. Michigan based Great Black Night will probably be the first American based band that I've had on repeat on my speakers over the past few weeks. Their 3 track EP entitled 'The Smoke Is Rising' has consistently made me smile every single time that I've listened to it.

America is producing some really great shoegaze & dreampop music as of late and in very many guises. But very few of those bands have actually left a mark on me like Great Black Night have. This bunch of brilliant musicians step outside of the box when it comes to adding interesting extra production & composition parts to their tracks, such as adding a Violin & Cello to a wall of layered guitars or adding a backing vocal to the very tip of the main vocal thus filling the overall track with that little bit of heaven. They make me sit back and think about their music. They make me gaze! Very few bands can do that to this listener.

They do something else amazing, which to me is what music should be about. Listening to 'The Smoke Is Rising EP' evokes so many memories of my youth that I simply had to write this review. It amazed me! It is full of thought provoking moments that bring out memories from the furthest reaches of this listeners mind. Memories of lying in the long grass on a warm summers day, years ago, with friends & family talking about Cocteau Twins, the Pros & Cons of the music scene on that particular day in time and other simple memories full of the excitement that comes with starting a band.

Listening to 'All My Lonely Days', the EP's opening track, for the first time really threw me. I wasn't expecting the immense production on it. This is a huge track. From the amazing lead vocal and especially the backing vocals, to the lush string section sitting on top of the guitars adding that extra sonic element to their overall sound. They instantly made themselves stand out to me as a great band. They are doing something different in this modern age of nu-gaze, shoegaze & dreampop and it's a commendable trait as far as I'm concerned. 'All my lonely days' is my favourite track on this debut release and it is a stunning piece of musicianship! Check it out for yourself below:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=231714960 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 track=4214986656]

Track 2, on this three track EP,  is called 'The DAAC Song'. This song does exactly what it says on the tin! It's a powerful track with a strong, intensely powerful vocal line that sits in the mix brilliantly. It has an infectious opening guitar line that keeps your attention firmly focused on the entire track and won't allow you to deviate from it. And again, the use of the string parts just under the vocals, throughout most of the track, is genius! Another brilliant addition to this EP.

The final track on the epic EP is a vivid journey through a deep, lush, dreampop infused soundscape. Its a beautiful piece of music entitled 'I've Got A Lot Of love'. Opening with an absolutely stunning vocal track, aligned with those epic strings, this song is a 4 minute roller coaster of emotions. With its delightful sonically brilliant guitar lines, those looping and arcing string arrangements,  which are all sitting on top of a steady bass and drum track, this song is a fitting end to a brilliant debut release by a band that I hope go on to bigger and brighter things in the future. I for one, can't wait to hear what this bunch of musicians do next.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=231714960 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=false artwork=small]

Great Black Night hail from Grand Rapids, Michigan. They are Steve D: guitar & vocals, Matthew Eastman: drums & piano, Angel Hayden: vocals, Anne LaGrand: cello, Patrick Schaafsma: violin and Andy Stob: bass. 'The Smoke Is Rising EP' was released to the masses on 16th December. It was Recorded and Engineered by Matthew Eastman at Eastman Audio, Grand Rapids Michigan.

In the bands own words they are -  'Celebrating excesses and restraint within the sounds of rock and roll, Great Black Night aim to give you the night of your lives. Great Black Night explores love and rebellion through soulful tender vocals, piercing guitars, lush strings, and driving rhythms. Great Black Night are your band. They sing songs for you and with you. Look up and gaze. The Great Black Night is a wondrous place' - Here, Here I Say!
