EP REVIEW | Starwheel - Starwheel EP

ARTIST: Starwheel

RELEASE: Starwheel EP

RELEASE DATE: December 16th 2017

RECORD COMPANY: Unsigned

Derby based quartet 'Starwheel' embrace and meld sounds and genres effortlessly. From subtle shoegaze to jangling psych pop, indie to alternative rock this band instil a surreal calmness to their their overall collective sound that is highly addictive and deeply hypnotic. The band released their debut double A-side single 'Drip Feed/Broken Glass' to the masses back in April 2016 and followed it up in 2017 with their stunning second single 'Sit Down/Through My window (Parts 1 & 2)'. Now the band have returned with their stunning self-titled debut four track EP and they do not disappoint. The EP was released back on the 16th December 2017 and it is available to buy/download right now via starwheel.bandcamp.com

Swirling organ sounds announce the arrival of track one 'Replica' and it's accompanied by bounding percussion, jangling guitar and the rambling of bass frequencies. Stunning vocals meander in and out of accomplished instrumentation permeated at times with subtle flourishes of catchy lead guitar, luscious reverberations and lines of slight backing vocals. Up next, the instrumental 'Radio Love' slows things down a tad as shimmering slide guitar draped in oodles of reverb and laid back guitar progressions wash over this listener. Slow methodical percussion dances underneath ferrying deep melodic bass lines with ease and allowing jangling lead lines to intertwine with fantastically hypnotic psychedelic frequencies.

The EP's penultimate piece entitled 'Veins' is filled to the brim with intense melody. The swirl of organ melds effortlessly with cascading bass lines and the gentle jangling strum of guitar. Steady percussion rattles below as the vocal track weaves a magical spell as it dances and moves in ands out of the collective instrumentation. It has catchy hook laden breaks that catch you off guard allowing you to soar skywards, if only for a short time, before you get pulled back into the mesmerising mix of dazzling sonic frequencies. 'Veins' is a triumph and quite possibly my favourite track on the entire EP. 'Safari' closes proceedings with a sweet little psych-pop gem. Boundless bass lines rush beneath sporadic percussive hits and rambling lead guitars run and meander in and out of breathless vocalisations. It's a wonderful little track and a brilliant ending to a marvellous EP.

EP REVIEW | Fuss - Fuss

ARTIST: Fuss

RELEASE: Fuss

RELEASE DATE: 1st September 2017

RECORD COMPANY: Modernsky UK

Liverpool based psych-pop aficionados 'Fuss' release their sublime debut self-titled four track EP on vinyl via Modernsky UK on September 1st 2017 just in time for their appearance at 'Liverpool's International Festival Of Psychedelia' on the 22nd September. The band are made up of David Baddeley, Tony Dixon, Karl Byrne, Bobby Reardon & Cormac Gould and they've previously shared the live stage with some serious sonic heavyweights such as the fantastic Psychic Ills, Ulrika Spacek and The Vryll Society. The 'Fuss' EP is available on lovely vinyl via Modernsky UK and digitally over on iTunes and Spotify.

Jangling melody driven guitars intertwine with swirling synth lines and throbbing bass progressions as 'Fluff' unfurls it's sticky sonic tendrils and washes this listener in simmering reverberations. Addictive vocalisations float into the ether held fast to sticky instrumentation, rocking slowly on a bedrock of steadying percussion and lysergic vibrations that build effortlessly into a kaleidoscope of sonic colour. Up next, 'Human Music' fills the ether with sparking guitar riffs, cascading bass lines and slow metronomic drumming as fizzing electronics and bubbling synths envelope another impressive vocal take. Lead guitars loop and arc in and out of catchy hook laden chorus progressions that float and undulate on magical psychedelically charged sonic frequencies.

'Life Forming' bubbles on a slow moving bass line as subtle organ stabs shimmer beneath the surface allowing the tinkering guitars to dance and move along that addictive drum pattern. Laid back vocals lead the listener on a sonic journey, keeping them focused on meandering guitar hooks and shimmering lead lines that circumnavigate the entire piece brilliantly. Thoroughly enjoyable, 'Life Forming' is my favourite track on the entire release. The EP closes out with it's lead single. 'Coma' enters audible range on a swirling guitar riff and simmering sampled vocalisations before exploding into a cacophony of instrumentation. It's fizzing synth lines hold court, strapped to a busy percussive pattern and the throb of magnificent bass frequencies as swirling psych induced guitars lick and whip those impressive vocal lines to within an inch of their life. 'Coma' is an absolutely absorbing piece of music and a fitting end to a marvellous debut EP. Definitely ones to watch going forward!

NEW SINGLE PREMIERE | Laedj. - Carpal Tunnel

Melbourne's resident noise merchants 'Laedj.' have returned with a stunning brand new single entitled 'Carpal Tunnel', the follow up to their recently released debut single 'Pacific', both of which are taken from their forthcoming debut EP penned in for release over the coming months. The band include members of Melbourne based outfits such as 'Inventions, Yachtburner, Breve, Singing For Humans' & 'Hotel on Mayfair' and their sound is distinctly fuzzy with shimmering shoegaze connotations underscored at times by soaring psych/dream pop flair. 'Carpal Tunnel' is available to buy/download right now from laedj.bandcamp.com

'Carpal Tunnel' drives into the ether lashed tightly to a busy percussive attack and straddled by throbbing bass lines & hazy production. Its guitar progressions swirl and arc throughout the piece, whipping up a sonic frenzy, sending out layer after layer of delicious reverb that collectively circumnavigates those impressive vocalisations. If this is a prelude to the full release we're definitely in for something rather special.

Recommended!
