Sunset Images - Obscure Daze (Gravy Records)

ALBUM REVIEW | Sunset Images - Obscure Daze (Gravy Records)

ARTIST: Sunset Images

RELEASE: Obscure Daze

RELEASE DATE: 7th April 2017

RECORD COMPANY: Gravy Records / Cintas

Mexico based experimental psych-gaze duo ‘Sunset Images’ released their brand new six track sophomore entitled ‘Obscure Daze’ to the masses back on the 7th April 2017 via Gravy Records/Cintas Records. The band are made up of Samuel Osorio - guitar/bass/vocals & Alejandro Zúñiga - drums and their collective sound on this latest release swims in a dark sea of intense experimentation with layers of frequential noise, fuzz, pounding percussion and massive swathes of reverberation carefully buffering effected vocalisations (appearing here for the first time as the band take a brilliantly executed step away from their usual ‘instrumental only’ sonic compositions). ‘Obscure Days’ follows on from their very impressive five track EP 'Hajime', released back in 2015 and is available on very limited edition transparent vinyl from Gravy Records, on cassette via Cintas Records & digitally from sunsetimages.bandcamp.com

An atmospherically dark, swirling repetitious drone drenched in rumbling bass frequencies and crackling guitar squall undulates into audible range as the opening track ‘Obscure Days’ works through all one minute thirty nine seconds of it’s sonic permutations graced in a wonderfully cinematic hue. It’s closely followed by a reverberating sonic behemoth in the form of the charging ‘1969’. This psych induced monster drives into the ether on a thunderous percussive pattern, is absolutely peppered with oppressive bass frequencies and squealing lead lines whilst carefully directing a wavering vocal line to its final destination. It erupts into a fuzzy wall of explosive noise before fading out into feedback laden obscurity.

Metronomic percussion underscored by a growling bass progression enters the arena as ‘No Hay Lugar’ shuffles into ear shot on a wave of scrawling fret noise before dragging soaring lead guitar lines out into the open to ride this tumbling repetitious beast. Sporadic haunting vocal lines join in with the maelstrom of resonating frequencies, building rapidly in intensity as layer after layer of reverb is added to the already bulging wall of noise that eventually morphs into the immense ‘Basilica’, a pounding one minute forty nine seconds of senses pummelling noise filled with explosive drum patterns, grumbling bass lines and angrily distorted guitars. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable six minutes of music.

The albums penultimate piece is a repetitious slab of resonating noise with swathes of modern psych intent underscored at times with a slight nod to garage psych. ‘Death’ shakes and rolls violently on a fuzzy cascading bass line as it’s accompanying percussive swagger rises and falls in and out of a deep dark sonic trench intertwined with subtle atmospheric passages of squealing lo-fi majesty. Glutinous raging howls add intense darkness as this track pulses and tumbles into a magnificent ending making it my favourite track on the entire release. The album closes out with ‘Roads’. Swathes of reverberation coupled with carefully placed production trickery announces it’s arrival as ‘Sunset Images’ pulse post-punk connotations into the mix. It’s rolling drum pattern holds throbbing bass frequencies and reverberating guitar lines in it’s wake, building with each impressive progressive cycle before breaking into a magnificently peaceful final break filled with huge swathes of reverb drenched instrumentation. A fitting ending to a marvellous album.

ALBUM REVIEW | Has A Shadow - Sorrow Tomorrow (Fuzz Club Records)

ARTIST: Has A Shadow

RELEASE: Sorrow Tomorrow

RELEASE DATE: 18th January 2017

RECORD COMPANY: Fuzz Club Records

Mexico natives 'Has A Shadow' release their sophomore album (their first via Fuzz Club Records) entitled 'Sorrow Tomorrow' on January 18th 2017. The band create a brand of dark and ritualistic modern day psych gaze that heaves and undulates through swathes of unabashed reverberation and driving instrumentation tinged with menacing gothic tones. This new album follows a run of EU dates that included an appearance at Liverpool Psych Fest and shows with LSD & The Search for God, TAU and The Jabberwocky Band. You can pre-order 'Sorrow Tomorrow' ahead of it's January release, on various formats over at www.fuzzclub.com

In a hail of fragmented frequencies and the sampled barking of dogs the opening salvo’s of ‘Sorrow’ squeal into audible range riding rough shot on shuddering synth swells and the metronomic sway of percussion. Tormented vocalisations swirl repetitiously as the track builds and surges into a raging sonic tornado allowing it’s wailing guitar progressions to pulse wave after wave of intense reverberation out into the ether. Up next, ‘Lord Of Flies’ saunters into the musical arena with a distinctly edgy swagger. It’s creeping drum pattern swings hypnotically dragging with it those dark organ progressions, snaking guitars and the menacing throb of bass frequencies. Vocally ‘Lord Of The Flies’ is steeped in gothic flair and unrepentant reverberation as we exquisitely meander through waves of intense dark frequential matter and swirling atmospherics making this a brilliantly executed track. Track three, 'The Flesh' pulsates and swirls on undulating waves of dark instrumentation that includes throbbing bass lines, reverb laced organ swells, repetitive percussion, fuzz -laden guitars and hauntingly good vocalisations.

‘Attack Of The Junkie’ effortlessly drones into earshot, building repetitiously as the drag of the organ swell brings with it those thunderous drums and echoing vocalisations. This track is a driving psych induced behemoth that takes no prisoners as it’s tremulous guitars & throbbing bass progressions wage a war of sonic attrition, bending unsuspecting frequencies at will until eventually turning them into a colossal wall of magnificent noise. ‘Attack Of The Junkie’ is a triumphant track, possibly my favourite on the entire album. It is inherently filled with hard hitting sonic aggression and worthy of your ears. ‘Cul De Sac’ pulses on a sequenced synth line as ‘Has A Shadow’ unleash a noisy post-punk sheen on proceedings. The melodious bass line weaves a jittering sonic web as it works through it’s predesignated course, all the while being harassed by swirling reverberation, intense vocalisations and dark menacing instrumentation. Guitars explode into a cacophony of noise as those hypnotically charged organ lines takes hold, dragging the listener with them on an undulating white knuckle thrill ride.

Up next, the albums latest single jangles into earshot steeped heavily in an air of atmospheric trepidation. ‘Vampire Kiss’ has brash and scuzzy guitars that swirl deep within a dark haze of reverb. You really have to check yourself as those throbbing bass frequencies & thunderous drums dance and swing a hypnotically charged jig, effortlessly circumnavigated by those hauntingly good organ lines and the foreboding vocal tones of Daniel Garcino. ‘Horror Will Grow’ swirls into the ether on a another repetitious drone as it’s menacing organ lines snake and move held fast within a turbulent cloud of dark reverberation accompanied by brilliantly executed guitar lines and shuffling percussive hits. This slow burning psychedelic beast stalks the outer limits of the subconscious as those swirling vocalisations of Garcino slowly pick their way through the many layers of the human psyche and burrow themselves where they can be instantly recognisable for future reference.

The albums penultimate track explodes in a torrent of thunderous drums and driving guitars. ‘Not Even Human’ shatters the slow burgeoning drag of the previous track by spewing forth a cacophony of fuzzy atmospheric instrumentation & jittering repetitious noise. Somewhere deep within the sonic maelstrom, however, Daniel Garcino vocals meticulously hold court and strenuously keep everything together magnificently. The albums final onslaught comes in the form of ‘World Sensation’, a swirling salacious beast riding a growling guitar progression and a sparse wave of percussion. The organ arrives on cue as the track explodes into a colourful array of reverberating frequencies orbiting another impressive vocal display, before we’re all swallowed up by glorious surf/psych sounds until the tracks finale! A belter of a track to finish off one hell of a sonic thrill ride.

EP REVIEW | The Holy Cosmos - THC/VC Split

a0064964003_2

Artist: The Holy Cosmos

Release: THC/VC Split

Release Date: 31/01/15

In the world of music there is no bigger force right now than the internet. Connectivity between bands of all disciplines and their fans is centred around their social media outlets & music streaming platforms. The age of lugging tape reels on airplanes so as to collaborate with your peers on the other side of the globe has gone to the great gig in the sky! Nowadays it’s all about click & send. One such cross geographical collaboration met on a Facebook music group called ‘Space Mantra’, a Facebook group dedicated to supporting psychedelic, shoegaze infused spacerock in all it’s many guises. ‘The Holy Cosmos’ are a spacerock band from Mexico City & along with a German friend of theirs, ‘Vintage Cucumber’ (I Kid You Not ), from Templin, Germany, they have just released a 6 track split EP entitled - ‘THC/VC Split’. Its split with 3 tracks from each artist.
The Holy Cosmos’ are: Rita – Drums, Vocals & Percussions, Ernesto - Drums & Percussions, Fabián – Bass, Marco – Guitar & Vocals, Josuæ – Guitar, Juan – Guitar. They met on the Facebook group - ‘Space Mantra’ & then in person at a rock show when they were two different bands. Ernesto & Marco were in ‘Voyager 2’ and Rita, Juan, Fabián & Josué were in ‘Neutle’. At the end of 2013 they decided to join forces to make the atmospheric juggernaut that is ‘The Holy Cosmos’. Their influences are wide reaching & impressive with Dead Skeletons, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Neu!, The Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, The Warlocks, Sonic Youth, Bardo Pond & MBV all on the list.
The ’THC/VC Split EP’ - is a supersonic roller coaster ride through blissful, lush musical highways intertwined with space heavy atmospheric tones. This is an amazing collaborative release full of pulsating instrumental shoegaze, psychedelic swells & luscious reverb drenched vocal swirls. For fans of shoegaze infused spacerock this is a must have release. 2015 is shaping up to being a massive year for the shoegazing genre.

The EP opens up with the first composition from ‘The Holy Cosmos’, a creeping monolith of a track called - ‘Fields’. It has a distinctive ‘Spacemen 3’ meets ‘Velvet Underground’ feel to it. You melt into its inner core & disappear inside until you are suspended in reverb drenched wonderment. Check it out:

Track 2 is another from a heavy hitting - ’The Holy Cosmos’. ‘Come On Riding’ - has that stoner-gaze vibe reminiscent of early stuff by Californian based gazers - ‘The Warlocks’. A sluggish repetitive guitar sequence hugs the bass & drums like a man in love! The reverb effected vocal lines intertwine & swirl around the entire track as it pulsates & moves like a snake. Immense track!

Track 3 is possibly my favourite on this whole release!Cult Of Skulls’ is a 5 minute plus, express elevator to hell! It explodes onto the musical canvass from the off and it twists & turns through layers of socially brilliant effected guitars, pulsating bass lines & solid Drums. This is an addictive musical masterpiece. It reminds me of another brilliant Australian based outfit called - ‘Luna Ghost’& their epic 2014 release ‘The Luna Ghost EP’. Check it out:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1238830105 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3849869443]

Track 4 is ‘Vintage Cucumber’ territory!  But don’t let the band name fool you. This is an absolutly immense track full of addictive reverb drenched guitar loops, reminescent in parts to early ‘Loop’ or american based instrumental shoegazers ‘Ghost Box Orchestra’. Its another full on edge of your seat sonic ride through layers & layers of effected guitars and solid drum tracks. ‘Mutterhertz’ is dance music in shoegazing form. LISTEN TO IT ON HEADPHONES. It will blow you away.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1238830105 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=4294653302]

Next up is another monster of a track!Vintage Cucumbers’ -’Rennsimulator Marke Eigenbau’ reminds me of ‘Contino Sessions - Death In Vegas’. Continuously pulsing vocal samples striding a drum track built for driving to, with swirling guitar lines and bass frequencies to die for. This track is another floor filler in gazing form. Look at your shoes.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1238830105 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1182247557]

The final track on this impressive release is another ‘Vintage Cucumber’ gem. Slower than the previous two tracks, ‘Windhart’, takes you by the hand and leads you into a sonic heaven full of angelic reverb laden tones worthy of worshiping on another musical plane. This stunning track opens up into a haunting vocal line filled with intent. It builds & builds into the chorus break like norse god waiting to explode. This is psychedelic shoegazing at its very, very best & it will send chills down your spine! Check it out for yourselves:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1238830105 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3207516991]
Im very impressed with both bands on this split release. The shoegazing genre of music is amazingly strong all around the globe and both of these acts are worthy of joining this new wave of gazing prowess currently caressing the earlobes of the worlds gazing fans. This Split EP is available up on bandcamp to download for free. Go and get a copy of it while you still can.
