Melbourne based experimental/psych/alt rockers 'BREVE' have self-released a stunning collection of tracks in the form of their debut album, brilliantly titled 'Nothing Stays The Same'. Having wowed us back in July with their then lead single we were eagerly waiting to get our mucky paws on the full ensemble and it did not disappoint. Their impressive take on the modern psych genre is absolutely breathtaking, so much so that I've given the album a rating of 5/5 and thats a rare occurrence for me. ‘Nothing Stays The Same’ opens up with ‘Konecrane’, a turbulent droning monster that wears its experimental heart on its sleeve. This track builds menacingly from its very first swirling tone until the addictively repetitive lead guitar lines crawl and intertwine effortlessly with steady percussion and throbbing bass frequencies, eventually leading us into an immense sampled filled break and on into its glorious finale! Up next, ‘Introverse’ woozily enters earshot on dark synth swells and sequenced percussion before opening up into an electronically charged psych behemoth. The vocal lines ride a heady mix of explosive reverberating instrumentation deliciously underscored by the the constant hum and throb of the unmissable bass line. ‘Cold Sweat On A Sunday’ enters the fray and immediately entices this listener whilst ‘Nothing Stays’ bursts into a cacophony of noise as its explosive drum patterns and the brilliantly executed guitar lines circumnavigate those immense vocal's, echoing ‘Queens Of The Stone Age’ with its instrumental intensity.
Sequenced percussion and sampled atmospheric’s announce the arrival of ‘Nothing Is Permanent’ as those repetitious guitars and the brilliantly executed (but highly infectious) vocal line permeates effortlessly through layers of reverb. ‘Nothing Is Permanent’ surges half way through into an angry sonic beast, unleashing a torrent of swirling noise until eventually fading out into obscurity. ‘Movement’ crawls into earshot on a menacing drone and a darkly ambient repetitious sample as its fragile vocal lines add atmosphere. The guitars swirl and glide in and out of a hi-hat heavy breakbeat before dragging the angry vocals back into the mix and on into a tremulous finale. There’s an air of movie soundcheck chic on the opening salvo’s of ‘Human’ as its haunting samples float underneath swirling feedback and jangling guitars before ‘Breve’ unleash a driving experimental onslaught onto their listeners. Wailing vocals and intricate bass lines meld effortlessly with explosive drum patterns and screaming wah-wah heavy guitar progressions to give us a progressive/psych rock behemoth. Up next, ‘Connected’ bounces on a bed of sequenced percussion, swirling synth drone and attention grabbing shakers. The vocals arrive as the instrumentation bubbles angrily beneath the surface and those lead guitar lines undulate effortlessly, constantly keeping time with the ever hypnotic shakers. There’s a subliminal message pulsing through every single note of ‘Connected’ that gives two fingers to the social media world of today and we all should pay very close attention to it’s infectious mantra.
The albums penultimate track entitled ‘Feel’ has loose ambient stylings swirling deep within its opening progressions. A beautifully translucent vocal pierces the ether and adds a subtle psychedelic edge to proceedings as swirling drones and malicious atmospherics move and swerve before the track explodes into a glorious cacophony of bass heavy noise and rumbling drum patterns. The albums closing piece staggers on a repetitious percussive sample as we journey through a world of psychedelic enchantment tipped with prog rock finery. ‘Elevate’ has an absolutely immense swagger about it as the metronomic thud of the percussion drags it’s vocal lines and melodious bass frequencies through layers of reverberation constantly assaulted by a swirling instrumental drone and screaming guitar squall. This is a stunning finale to a magnificent debut album.

One of our favourite noisy shoegaze outfits here at Primal Music, the fantastic Melbourne based 'Bloodhounds On My Trail', have announced the release date for their forthcoming highly anticipated brand new EP entitled 'Haunted Isles'. The EP will get its full release on November 18th 2016 via US based independent label 'Moon Sounds Records' and it promises to be something seriously special. Before that however, the band have unleashed the second track to be lifted from the aforementioned 'Haunted Isles' EP. This new track is called 'Places Like This' and it follow's on from the EP's brilliant lead single 'Over The Wall', unleashed to the masses back in September 2016.

'Bloodhounds On My Trail' continue to captivate the underground fraternity with their melancholic style of atmospheric shoegaze that blissfully harks back to that late 80's/early 90's sound of wall to wall reverberation coupled with melody filled vocalisations and driving fuzzed out instrumentation. Firmly stabled within the burgeoning Melbourne based shoegaze scene, 'Bloodhounds On My Trail' create blissed out sonic soundscapes that continue to both enthral & excite us all at once.
This latest track, entitled 'Places Like This', jangles into earshot on a deeply surreal wave of hazy atmospheric guitars before we quickly lurch forward into a tumbling drum pattern and the instantly addictive hum of the bass frequencies. The vocals arrive, suspended knee deep in swathes of blissful reverb, as the track builds in momentum and leads us into a chorus progression that swirls immensely in a maelstrom of beautiful noise. 'Bloodhounds On My Trail' can do no wrong .... and that only bodes well for the full EP release.

'Over The Wall' swirls into earshot on a maelstrom of growling fuzzy frequencies before unfolding into a deliciously melodious slice of post punk infused shoegaze. Its driving baseline is captivating as it hugs the steading percussive attack, infectiously twisting around the utterly addictive vocal line, allowing the soaring hazy guitar squall to wash luscious reverberation across the entire musical piece. You can't get a better recommendation than that.
Melbourne based shimmering experimental shoegaze/psych outfit 'Wild Meadows' have released a stunning new video to accompany their latest single 'Nowhere'. The single was released back on the 28th of August 2016 and is lifted from their forthcoming full length debut album, penned in for release later this year. The blissed out accompanying video was recorded back in 2015 with AJ Bradford & Thomas Scott Holland.
'Nowhere' jangles on a glorious bed of fantastically addictive golden frequencies, reverberating layered instrumental progressions and effervescent guitar squall. Vocally sublime and reminiscent of many of the very early shoegaze stalwarts, 'Nowhere' is an melancholic slice of modern day, melodious psych-gaze.

Formed in early 2013, noisy shoegaze trio 'Flocks' have been holed up rehearsing in Bayswater in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Three years and five drummers later they are ready to unleash their debut record to the masses. With so much good music coming out of Australia these days is hardly surprising when I tell you that another brilliant band from that immense continent got in touch with the blog to announce their debut EP. We've touched on Melbourne based shoegaze/dream-pop bands before on the Primal Music Blog, so you all should know by now just how good bands emerging from that city are at creating immensely sounding atmospheric soundscapes. 'Wild Meadows' are no different! Hailing from Melbourne primarily, but with band members originating in Birmingham, Wellington & Adelaide also, 'Wild Meadows' have a distinctly early 90's shoegaze sound with an underlying nod to 60's psych-pop & 80's electronica all intertwined with an impressive modern day 'nu-gaze' twist. The band are: Kat Karamitros - vocals & keyboards, James Ross - guitar & vocals, Donovan Pill - bass, Chris Rodgers - guitar & Tom S - drums. The 4 track ’Wild Meadows EP’ opens up with the immense - ‘Colours’. A distinctive post-punk edge adorns this modern day gazing gem with swirling effected guitars, a beautiful vocal line & a really addictive bass track. Fans of Philadelphia based outfit - ‘The Morelings’ will love this track. The chorus explodes onto the musical landscape announcing the arrival of yet another amazing Melbourne based post-punk infused shoegazing outfit. Sublime!

Track 2 - ‘Jennifer’, is a journey back in time to the early 90’s with its melodic vocal lines, swells of reverb drenched guitars & power-pop explosions! Reminiscent in parts to early 90’s, UK based - ‘Chapterhouse’, this is stunning example of a band in tune with their musical influences & surroundings! The songwriting & song structuring on this track are immense and coupled with the production makes this debut EP's stand out track for me. It has this addictive chorus break that will have you hooked from the very first listen & what’s going on under the vocal track is nothing short of beautiful. ‘Jennifer’ - is the bedrock of this entire EP as far as I’m concerned and that makes it possibly my favourite track. Track 3 ‘Save Yourself’ may lean more towards garage & 60’s psych-pop with it’s guitar stylings but it’s all about the vocal track on this one for me! Kat Karamitros (Vocals & Keyboards) has an alluring tone to her vocal that keeps you interested in the tracks that she takes the lead on. Both - ‘Save Yourself’ & this EP’s opening track - ‘Colours’, have a depth to them and I believe it’s down to Karamitros vocal abilities. They sit really well with a layered wall of reverb effected guitars, driving bass & explosive drums. Check it out:

The closing track on this impressive debut release from Melbourne based gazers ’Wild Meadows’ entitled - ’Stare At The Sun’ is another solid, early 90’s sounding melodic track full of impressive song writing and catchy production. Im not sure of the bands influences and if I offend them in any way I apologise in advance, but I can hear ‘The Soup Dragons’ & early ‘Pearl’ era ’Chapterhouse’ on this track and it doesn't disappoint at all. This is a brilliantly executed debut release from ‘Wild Meadows’. It showcases some really impressive songwriting skills with tracks that loop & arc through layers of effected sound-waves & vocal tones to die for. It will have you wanting to hear more from them & I look forward to hearing what comes next? A full release will tell more & until then I wish them well.

1) Who are you? Tell us about the formation of the band & your history?
We are Bloodhounds On My Trail from Melbourne, Australia who practice the art form of music, writing songs, sharing experiences & falling out. In other words, we are a band. It all started pretty spontaneously with Johnny and Nik jamming on a few ideas that I had on a loop pedal. Johnny was listening to a lot of Jesus and Mary Chain at the time and that really inspired him to start a new band. Once they had worked out a few songs (incl 'She's In My Plans') Chris was asked to come check out what they were doing with it in mind to have him join as another guitarist since two guitarists could create a big sound. After hearing what the then duo had created Chris was immediately impressed and keen to contribute to what they were creating. After some practices as a trio a good friend Jonny O'Hara was recruited on bass who appeared on Escape EP. Shortly after the release of that EP O'Hara parted ways & Che (of Miniatures) threw his hat in the ring to punch out the 4 stringer. A brief history for a band that has only been around for just over a year.
2) Who are your biggest influences?
We focus heavy on the song writing aspect & find influence comes more from life & experiences than just music. We don't ever decide we like a particular tune so we try to do one like it. Its more the fact that tunes are written that capture a particular mood musically & have a particular content lyrically. Influence on writing a song comes from conscious thought that's decided by what happens to & around us or to an individual and the music is a subconscious influences based on the music we enjoy to listen to. As the music aspect goes, as a band we are into a wide range of music (anything from late 80s, early 90's UK/US stuff to Rockabilly to Punk) and we really dig that. It helps in keeping the ideas interesting and exciting. We collaborate and flesh out a lot of songs from a basic idea Johnny or Chris bring to the table and it's really cool when you leave rehearsal with a song that has taken a direction that you didn't see coming... Those are the songs that give us a buzz.

3) Describe your sound?
Underneath it all we hope our song writing comes through followed by a big sound sonically. We are always trying to keep tunes very much together in terms of the instrumentation so we can have a thick blanket of sound. Maybe think of drone sounding guitars where the bass denotes chord changes & a most solid of beats. Add to that some JAMC inspired riffs melodies that are emotive.

4) What inspired you to start making music?
It's best when it's more in your blood than a particular moment when you decide to make music. Sure there are turning points that may make you do something because it inspired you but music had always been a big part of growing up for all of us so it's just been a natural step from the beginning. Like Johnny got into a lot of bands (The Smiths, The clash, The White Stripes, The Beach Boys...all the good stuff) from the vinyl his Dad played from the lounge room. Wasn't something consciously thought about, just loved hearing new bands and new songs so figured why not learn guitar and start a band. The brothers (Nik & Chris), like Che as well grew up with a musical parents so nature + nurture will always win.

5) What do you love about shoegaze?
The music itself just hits the right chord with all of us. Never really thought about it. Just heard and loved it immediately. Also the "scene" is a great community really. All supportive. The way it always has been really. It's niche. Niche people always get each other more.
6) Why is it important for the world to hear your music? What kind of message would you like to share with international listeners?
Because like bands that we love, be that local or international, everyone can bring something great. We like to think that people could be getting a good buzz of hearing our music just like when anyone listen to anything that they enjoy. As for a message... Escape?

7) What are some of your favorite bands or albums?
We wanna take this question to plug some Roogaze (Australian Shoegaze) that we love (no particular order of course): Lowtide, Contrast, Miniatures, Hideous Towns, Flyying Colours, Blush Response, Luna Ghost, Kigo, Lunaire, Roku Music, Fait. So many. Probably missed some!
8) Musically, what are your bands plans over the next year?
Been writing a lot of new songs recently and plan to release a couple of singles in this year followed by an EP. We have just finished recording a cover of a ''Dreams Burn Down" by gaze fav's Ride for a Ride tribute compilation that is available on 'the blog that celebrates itself' bandcamp - check it out! Other than that, play more shows locally, around Australia and internationally perhaps!

Over the past few years the Australian shoegazing scene has produced an amazing wealth of talent, spanning every corner of it's awe inspiring continent. From Sydney to Adelaide, Perth to Brisbane, we all know that 'the scene that celebrates itself ' is alive and well in Australia. But there is one city that stands out from all others! It seems to me that every single Australian based shoegaze band that I have come across these days hail's from this city alone! To me, Melbourne has produced some of the best post-punk, noise-rock & shoegaze infused artists over the past 24 months than any other city that I can think of. Bands such as Contrast, VHS Dream, Hideous Towns, Flyying Colours, Lunaire, Glaciers & Luna Ghost have created some amazingly beautiful blissed out tracks that I have played religiously on my online radio show 'The Primal Radio Show' for Radioactive//Underground.
But there is one Melbourne based band, that to me, epitomises a 60's fuzzy psychedelic sound & not only connects 80's atmospheric post-punk to early 90's gaze but who also adds a modern edge to their sound to create an addictive, reverb soaked, maelstrom of layered effects and beautiful melodies that would grace any soundtrack to a modern day musical audience. Released on the 14th October 2014, Engineered by Matt Hosking & Mixed by Rob Long at Birdland Studios & Los Bomberos, Escape is another of those EP's that has come straight out of left field and completely captivated me from the very first listen! I am instantly a fan of this band's sound. I spent my teenage years listening to some of the sounds that influence Bloodhounds On My Trail, such as Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, Ride, Jesus & Mary Chain, Stooges, MC5 & The Velvet Underground. I can hear every single one of those influential bands on this EP and that, for me, is a special thing! It's a really special thing in todays new wave of shoegaze!
The EP kicks off with the stunning 'Old Fools'. This is the doorway into a world where dreams are collected and played back via the medium of shoegazing! The intro to this song alone will send shivers down your spine and leave you floating in ethereal space. It is 5 minutes 36 seconds of beautiful, blissed out sounds that hit you in waves with their thundering drums and thriving bass lines! The guitar's alone on this track remind me of a Cheetah stalking it's prey! They swirl around the tracks moving parts with menace and pounce with speed when the immense vocal arrangements fall away & let the guitars dictate the space! This track will force the breath from your lungs it is that intense! But please, don't take my word for it. Go and check it out for yourself -

'Dreamless', the second track on Bloodhounds On My Trail's impressive debut EP, takes your hand and guides you through a blissful soundscape of shoegaze. It open's up into another stunning track and I'm starting to think that this band alone will cross divides and open the genre of shoegazing and its many sub-cultures up to a wider audience. This is yet another beautiful track with a wall of sound that evokes an ethereal almost dreamlike feeling. I love it when a band can unlock feelings from it's listeners or when the music that a band creates can tap into a feeling & force you to remember good times! Bloodhounds On My Trail have a knack of teasing out memories, but in a good way!

Track 3, 'Jolly', is a shoegaze traditionalist's wet dream! This track could have been plucked from 1989/1990. It's the closest track that I have heard resembling anything from that era in this modern day shoegazing world. It is stunningly beautiful. This is shoegazing on a cinematic scale. Swirling guitars blended with that amazing bass sound, those steady drums & Johnny Green's infectious vocals make this track a 'Stand Out' track for me and one that every single fan of the shoegaze genre of music should have on repeat. This should be the 'go to' track for future shoegaze fans. To have mastered a sound so infectious on a debut EP deserves major props to Bloodhounds On My Trail. I doubt even the inner sanctum of shoegaze aficionados would disagree with me when I say - " This is shoegaze! "

A soothing intro heralds the angelic arrival of the closing track on the already impressive 4 track EP. 'Silence, It's Golden' is yet another shining example of pure unhinged shoegaze! The wall of layered guitars & effected vocals hits you like a steam train. The chorus on this track is absolutely stunning with its addictive chord change, pounding drums and immense vocal all sitting on top of a steady beat. This is a fitting end, to what I believe, is a game changer for fans of the shoegaze genre. This is one hell of a release! Check it out below -
