Manchester based experimental psych aficionado's 'Dead Sea Apes' have returned with a brand new album entitled 'Sixth Side Of The Pentagon'. The band have been carving out their own rather special niche in a scene that strives on it's core principles of expansive and consciousness-altering guitar, bass and drum based compositions. 'Dead Sea Apes' have never easily fitted into a 'psychedelic scene' as such like so many of their contemporaries but have instead taken a different path to sonic enlightenment by experimenting with dub, electronic sequencing and mind altering reverberations that both thrill and hypnotise all at once. Cavernous reverb peppered with echoing percussive delays swirl menacingly around the rise and fall of a repetitive bass line as ‘The Map Is Not The Territory’ kicks open the door to an atmospheric world of mesmerising (almost incantational) psychedelic dub. This track heaves effortlessly through moments of unrepentant experimentation as growling guitars ride soaring instrumental drones and deliriously off kilter drum patterns as its lead lines whip and harass the senses with wild sonic abandon. Up next, ‘Sixth Side Version I’ provides an atmospheric interlude before ‘Low Resolution’ staggers into earshot riding a resonating drone and slow moving bass line. Synth lines fizz as the tension builds and the track meanders through layers of reverberating lead guitar lines collectively battered by angry synchronised electronics. ‘Dead Sea Apes’ inject the twenty second long 'Sixth Side Version II' next, fitting another piece into the sonic jigsaw before unleashing the brilliant ‘Pale Anxiety’, my favourite track on the entire release. Slow moving drones swirl and loop around a snaking bass line as a repetitive percussive assault keeps a steady metronomic beat. The occasional delayed vocal line slips into earshot riding a turbulent processional wave of noisy reverb laden electronics, jittering effected guitar lines and the odd chopped brass sample that tumbles and dances through layers of echoing hypnotics.
‘Nerve Centre’ explodes into a cacophony of guitar stabs, intense ethereal vocal samples as wailing lead guitar lines and those off tempo drum patterns that collectively add billowing atmosphere. This track hangs suspended in the sonic ether, held fast in a whirlwind of undulating reverb and mind bending production. 'Sixth Side Version III' enters audible range and squeezes shuddering lo-fi instrumentation into a melting pot of spellbinding echoing delays whilst ‘Lo Res’ ambles into the ether tethered to a meandering bass line and it’s accompanying sequenced electronic theatrics. Glorious guitar progressions act like bedrock thus fixating this listener to their hypnotising sway whilst swirling bleeps and whirrs meld with immense production to bring us on a gratifying sonic adventure of immense proportions. The album twinkles and jitters in a golden hued haze before the opening salvos of ‘Tentacles (The Machine Rolls on)’ shatter the illusion and unfurl their sonic tendrils to intertwine brilliantly with a shuddering drum pattern, undulating bass progression and venomous lines of spoken word. Angry sequenced production gradually bubble up to the surface to circumnavigate the entire piece, draping it in resonating reverb laced snare hits and the constant gyrating throb of bass.
The album drags ‘Sixth Side Version IV’ out into the open to show us it’s final death throws before plying us with it’s closing soundscape. ‘Rectifier’ jangles and sways on a wave of fizzing synth, hypnotic bass and the repetitive pitter patter of steady metronomic percussion. Heady lead lines stream and glide in close proximity to those senses pummelling effected delays and the occasional stab of rhythm guitar as ‘Dead Sea Apes’ exhume every single morsel of hallucinogenic dub they can muster and fire it out into the sonic ether. A fitting end to a bloody marvellous album.

'Crossed Wires' is infectiously atmospheric! It undulates through impressive swathes of shoegaze finery buy has subtle post-rock tendencies that emerge through it's reverb laden shadows then last for a fleeting second only to be swallowed up between the layers of shimmering guitar progressions. It rocks metronomically on a jazz like percussive swagger, is underscored by throbbing bass frequencies and subterranean synth swells that seem to swirl effortlessly around those stunning vocalisations.

In a melancholic haze of tattered guitar frequencies and growling atmospherics the opening chord sequence of ‘Half Poison, Half God’ drags itself into the ether and proceeds to wraps itself around infectious vocalisations before swaying awkwardly on the sudden injection of a sparse percussive pattern. ‘Half Poison, Half God’ splashes into a swirling pool of reverb laden noise as repetitive guitar progressions cut through barking bass frequencies to collectively hold time with the metronomic swoosh of echoing tambourine hits. Up next, ‘Alice’ surges effortlessly with dark sullen energy as it’s melodiously fuzzy bass frequencies weave & bob in and out of hypnotic lead guitar lines. Subdued percussion and hauntingly good synth swells add tons of atmosphere as Craig Dyer’s vocal holds court, keeping you transfixed on it’s impressive gothic tone.
The heavy repetitive thump of plodding drum rudiments coupled with the engrossing twang of atmospheric guitars heralds the arrival of ‘You Made It Baby’ and we’re instantly thrown into a world of desolate landscapes, isolation and wild frontier towns. Swirling desert like reverberations envelope everything as subtle instrumental drones echo behind Dyer’s tendril like vocals and aid in the undulating sway of it’s sonic proceedings. The track eventually pulses into a turbulent mass of fuzzy noise before dissipating back into the repetitive plonk of fret noise and salubrious percussion. ‘Beast (Anti War Song)’ does exactly as it says on the tin as it strides into earshot like some plucky teenager on a first date. Driving bass lines ride a steadying drum pattern as soaring lead licks whip noisy frequencies up into a sonic frenzy, building exponentially through the angry verse parts only to then soar effortlessly through those impressive instrumental chorus progressions before fizzing out into nothingness.
Jangling atmospherics underscored by droning organ swells swirl gracefully around the vocals as the constant tap of subtle percussive hits keep a kind of rag tag timing rattling repetitively in the background. ‘A Dirty Piece Of Love For Us To Share’ tip toes magically through glorious guitar progressions and brilliant production to bring a sullen acoustic swerve to proceedings. Up next, ‘Amerika’ drones into earshot accompanied by twinkling instrumentation, whirring feedback and the hollow thrum of sequenced percussion. It stalks and skulks in a densely oppressive sonic fog as it’s vocals swirl menacingly in the musical ether whilst next, ’The Outsider’ instrumentally builds from the off echoing in harmony with the effected vibrato of the vocals and the swirling underscore of synth drone. ‘Persistent Stable Hell’ howls into existence on squally instrumental feedback and the pulsing vibrations of a repetitive kick drum. The vocals arrive held fast within a hazy swirl of reverb as throbbing bass frequencies hum and undulate underneath screaming lead guitar licks and dark reverberation. The addition of female vocals add hauntingly good atmosphere here as all around them pulses and moves in a cacophony of blissful noise.
The albums penultimate piece heaves and breathes on a bedrock of sequenced synth lines, sporadic drum patterns and fuzzy bass frequencies. ‘Your Sweet Love’ swirls in a spiralling sonic whirlwind filled with noise, shuddering reverb and sullen gothic flair. It's vocalisations are trance like as they hypnotically revolve and billow in the heady psych induced stew, modulating wildly until they become one with the instrumentation and eventually throb in a series of sonic pulses. The albums closing piece strums acoustically into the ether as the plink of a piano line echoes & melds brilliantly underneath, constantly harassed by subtly aggressive lead guitar lines. ‘Incapable Of Love’ is laced with darkness as Dyer’s speaking parts venomously spit out a dystopian narrative steeped in atmosphere whilst languishing brilliantly in a bourgeoning musical juggernaut. This is a marvellous ending to a magnificent album.

The opening salvo’s of this three track EP swirl within a melee of screeching guitar squall, deep regressive reverb and that impressive repetitive guitar line. The vocal production on ‘Do You Love Life, Sweetheart?’ is fantastic and it add’s serious bloody weight to proceedings and I cant help but hear some subtly brilliant ‘Echo And The Bunnymen’ styled connotations streaming through their inner core (We’re big fans of ‘The Bunnymen’ here at Primal Music!). The track loops and arc’s throughout the sonic spectrum as a maelstrom of layered & fuzzy reverberating joy pummels this listeners audible senses all the way to the tracks finality! An absolutely stunning opening track. Bravo! The title track is an stunning psychedelic journey through swathes of golden hued synth swells and beautiful atmospheric piano stabs that seem to hang in suspended animation as a massive cyclonic whirlwind of huge reverb laden drones plough a sonic furrow through the musical ether. ‘Attica’ is blissful track and definitely worthy of a listen through headphones!
The EP’s closing piece entitled ‘Down By My Wings’ floats into earshot on a reverberating melodic guitar line that circumnavigates another impressive vocal performance. Glitchy fret noise glides throughout, as the track begins to build thus announcing its heavy percussive hits and a change of melody as it bursts into a charging chorus progression with aplomb. Coming in at fifteen minutes plus ‘Down By My Wings’ demands your attention as it meanders through its sonic gears and on into its immense explosive frequency bending finale! A fitting end to a rather interesting three track EP.
