EP REVIEW | Arirang - Geisha

a3745430110_16

ARTIST: Arirang

RELEASE: Geisha EP

RELEASE DATE: 29/04/15

RECORD COMPANY: Unsigned

Italy is a hotbed of brilliantly emotive, post punk fuelled, droning shoegaze & dreampop bands these days and ‘The Primal Music Blog’ has reviewed many of them before. From Milan to Napoli, Rome to Modena we are big supporters of the Italian ‘Scene That Celebrates Itself' or ‘Italiogaze’ as the scensters are calling it these days. This week we were introduced to yet another immense musical outfit based in Italy. ‘Arirang’ were born in Milan and are made up of Marco Mercuzio P - Guitars / Vocals, Francesco M - Bass & Giacomo C on Drums. Their debut EP release entitled ‘Geisha’ was officially announced to the masses back in April 2015 and is a truly magnificent collection of post rock inspired soundscapes intertwined with stunningly emotive cinematic shoegaze that is at times interspersed with post punk inspired vocal arrangements that will leave you truly amazed. The musicianship alone on this 5 track release is simply stunning!

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=1064209580 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small]

The EP opens up with beautifully arranged ‘Humming Rigmaroles’. This is a slice of cinematic post rock in its purest form. Stunning reverb infused vocals sit on top of an enticing drum arrangement & lead you into its explosive core. This track is full of musical peaks & troughs and it will take you on an unbelievable sonic journey. Stunning!

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1064209580 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=2694668889]

Track 2 ‘Mantrabox’ begins with full on rock god connotations. Reminiscent in parts to ‘God Is An Astronaut’ with its explosive guitar arrangements and post rock infused progressions. The reverb fuelled vocal arrangement is simply addictive and leaves you wanting more. There’s a subtle hint of programmed drums running through this tracks spine but this only enhances the overall sound. Check it out:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1064209580 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1014906922]

Track 3 is another cinematic soundscape wonder! ‘Under The Mount’ begins on a slower curve than the previous 2 tracks but don’t be fooled. This track opens up into an instrumental shoegazing masterclass as waves & waves of emotive walls of reverb drenched guitars wash over you and scoop you up with their many layers of immense goodness until it breaks and gently places back onto terra firma. I am amazed at the level of musicianship that Arirang are expressing on this track. It is simply sublime! Bravo!

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1064209580 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1439868497]

Track 4 - 'Oh Whale', is a slow burner. Ethereal vocals float on top of a steady but sparse percussion arrangement & intoxicating guitar lines until it erupts into a full on post rock gem. ‘Arirang’ have a cunning knack of bringing their listeners on a journey of musical discovery with the ebb & flow of their musical soundscapes. The programmed drum patterns returns mid way through the track but again it adds to the overall sound. This is yet another beautiful track of immense proportions & fans of emotive post rock will instantly fall in love with it. Stunning! Check it out:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1064209580 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=2737744656]

The closing track on this impressive release from Milan based ‘Arirang’ is a whopping 12 minutes plus of post punk infused vocal arrangements, droning sounds, pounding drums & swirling guitars. 6 minutes in and silence . . . . . . only to build into a maelstrom of instrumental shoegaze fuelled swirling guitars & pounding drums of immense proportions. A fitting end to a truly epic release.

EP REVIEW | Kimono Lights - Sugar Loneliness

a1599904452_16

ARTIST: Kimono Lights

RELEASE: Sugar Loneliness

RELEASE DATE: 21/05/15

RECORD COMPANY: Unsigned

Back in February 2015 Italian based noise merchants 'Kimono Lights' exploded onto the underground music scene with a stunning body of work full of dreampop flair, post rock connotations & touches of shoegaze magnificence. Their debut album 'Imprinting' was a snapshot of a band on the rise. I wrote about 'Imprinting' for The primal Music Blog on its release ( Check It out : HERE ) & at the time I stated that this band had a lot more to give musically! Now the band have dispensed of their beautiful dreampop infused swirls & replaced it with full on shoegazing soundscapes that will have you dazzled with its walls of guitars, angst vocals & impressive musical constructions. There is an air of experimentation on their latest EP entitled 'Sugar Loneliness'  & in my opinion this will surely catapult them into many an end of year top EP of 2015 list. 'Sugar Loneliness' is a sonic thrill ride through layers of reverb drenched guitars, pounding drums, throbbing bass lines & impressive vocal arrangements & is a must have EP for any shoegaze fan. The band hail from San Pancrazio, Italy and are made up of Andrea Crispy Smiths - Guitar and Vocals, Manuel Fabbri - Bass, Matteo Sama - Guitar & Enrico Piraccini - Drums and Vocals.

This latest EP opens up with the rather impressive 'Milkshake'. Driving guitars & steadying drums lead the charge until a full on high octane, angst ridden vocal arrangement drags us to a blissful soaring reverb drenched chorus. This is a statement of intent from a band experimenting with their sound. It is addictively sublime. Check it out:

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=4212694537 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small track=2150004652]

Track 2 has touches of the bands brilliant debut album 'Imprinting' all over it. There are hints of their earlier ambient post rock explorations through the intro & verses of 'Give Me' but its in the explosive shoegazing chorus parts that I find solace. This track soars like an eagle through the chorus. Production wise it is immense. The guitars loop & arc throughout with a vocal track reminiscent of early Loop. This is Immense! Check k it out:

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=4212694537 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small track=3512036198]

'Deception' - track 3 on 'Kimono Lights' latest EP offering 'Sugar Loneliness' has a multitude of genre's streaming through its core. I can hear flurries of 80's alternative infused with a melodic dreampop vocal line that sits on top of that infectious, effected drum pattern & screaming reverb laden guitar parts. This track will keep you hooked from its very first note! To me this is something new for us fans of this modern day shoegaze/dreampop revival & it goes to show how hard 'Kimono Lights' are working in studio to release something different. 'Deception' is a triumphant track & one worthy of your ears. Check it out:

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=4212694537 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small track=3978921574]

'Kimono Lights' never fail to impress me! Track 4 on 'Sugar Loneliness' is simply beautiful. 'Cherry' - evokes feelings of loss & emptiness with its infectiously spacious acoustic guitar lines & psychedelic electric touches all swirling around that immense vocal line. It guides you through it's 3 minutes plus of intense beauty until a disturbance in the form of a screaming wall of guitars takes you to another place where love rules & reverberation is king. This is stunning ........

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=4212694537 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small track=2952424443]

The opening bars of 'Sugar' - Track 5 on the latest release from Italian gazers 'Kimono Lights' feels like it shouldn't be here? Im confused at why they would want to put it on this release at all. A complete turn around from the previous 4 monumental tracks, this reminds me of early 90's indie rock? Not my cup of tea but sure to interest the gallery crowd at least.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=4212694537 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small track=3302104067]

The final track on this EP brings us back to normality. 'Lift To Hell' is 2 minutes of reverb laden instrumentation with the driving guitar swells,  impressive drum patterns & swirling psychedelic sounds typical of  this new sounding 'Kimono Lights'. Too short to over explore but a fitting end to a blissful EP.

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=4212694537 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small track=666557091]

Overall this is brilliant release from a very competent collection of musicians who are not afraid to experiment with sound. 'Kimono Lights' have the ability to push on and make serious waves in this modern day shoegazing revival. I am seriously impressed at how much they have progressed from their immense debut album. This EP is worth every single second of your time & your music collection will thank you for adding it to its ranks.

a0347054535_2

ARTIST: La Casa Al Mare

RELEASE: This Astro EP

RELEASE DATE: 07/04/15

RECORD COMPANY: Unsigned

I first came across La Casa Al Mare after the release of their double A side single 'CD girl / M' back in September 2014  & their blissful sound had me hooked instantly. Their walls of reverb laden guitars enticed me in and welcomed me with open arms. They have a distinct sound that harks back in parts to the hazy shoegazing sounds of the early 1990's. Full of expressionism & psychedelic influence La Casa Al Mare create a maelstrom of lucid but emotive shoegaze that transcends most modern day shoegazing bands but they don't showboat or gloat about it in any way. They are reserved in their songwriting ability but can bend & twist frequencies at a whim to manufacture a sound so addictive that it will have you yearning to hear more. I firmly believe that listening to them will transport you to another sonic plain - a higher plain, where psychedelic Shoegaze is king! Hailing from Rome, Italy La Casa Al Mare are: Marco Poloni - Bass & Vocals, Paolo Miceli - Drums & Alessio Pindinelli - Guitars & Vocals and they have just released their epic debut first full EP entitled -  'This Astro EP'. The EP opens up with the magnificent - 'I Don't Want To'. A solid wall of sound hits you between the eyes and transports you back to 1989/90  & into a live venue packed with people focused on a new musical adventure unfolding before their eyes. This Is shoegazing as it should be. Touches of My Bloody Valentine swirling around a tornado of Guitars, Bass, Drums & Vocals to create a sound so beautiful it will blow you away.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3027048551 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=907466788]

Track 2 is the immense - 'Sunflowers'. For those of you who have never listened to 'La Casa Al Mare' before this should be your starting point. A blissful roller-coaster ride of sonic emotions wash over you as you glide on a wave of reverb laden guitars, pounding drums & blissful vocal tones. This is how it should be. This is shoegaze.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3027048551 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=455248818]

Sonically mind-blowing & immensely addictive 'M' enters the musical arena like a steam train. Released back in September 2014 this is a  swirling monstrous maelstrom of sound twisting around an addictive vocal line that sends shivers down your spine with its wave after wave of reverb laden guitar swells! Its another triumphant track & the very first track that I initially ever heard from this immense band. After listening to this I was instantly hooked. You will be too.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3027048551 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=48891519]

Subtle hints of 60's psychedelia float on the sonic waves of track 5 on this impressive debut EP release from Rome based 'La Casa Al Mare'. 'Tonight Or Never' - is a laid back slice of coolness. Acoustic guitar tones soothe the atmosphere & create a welcome break from the previous sonic onslaught of the opening 3 tracks. Check it out:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3027048551 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1933050236]

The closing track on 'This Astro EP' doesn't disappoint. 'CD Girl' is another brilliant example of a band in love with their music. This track will take you by the hand and guide you through a universe of immense sonic delights with crashing drums & addictive guitar lines. Reminiscent at times to Ride, Slowdive & Chapterhouse - 'CD Girl' will wash over you, cleanse you of your sins & take you on a magical journey. A modern day masterpiece. Wait for the chorus change to hit you & enjoy:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3027048551 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1601547081]

This is a magical EP full to the brim of what modern day shoegazing should be about. Emotive, awe inspiring & addictive tracks that open up your senses to every single blissful note. Do yourselves a favour & go and get a copy of this release. It is simply stunning . This is only a starting point for 'La Casa Al Mare' & I now urge them as a band to go & write a full album of new material & unleash it on to the world because I for one will be top of the Q to buy it when they do.

ALBUM REVIEW | Kimono Lights - Imprinting.

a1184404545_2

Artist: Kimono Lights

Release: Imprinting

Release Date: 18/02/15

Record Company: Unsigned

We're no strangers to Italian shoegaze/dream-pop scene here at Primal Music HQ. In fact we actively promote the Italian gaze scene to the best of our abilities because we believe that it has some serious contenders in this modern day shoegaze landscape. The standard of underground shoegaze & dream -pop coming out of Italy today is immense! So it won't surprise you when I say that 'Kimono Lights' debut album entitled 'Imprinting', should be classed as one of the best of albums of 2015 so far!  It is a stunning release filled with atmospheric post-rock tendencies, all intertwined with dream-pop swells. It is filled with expressive, emotive shoegaze induced imprints. Immerse yourself into a cauldron of psychedelic goodness & let the sonic pulses wrap themselves around you as you float on a solid wave of reverb drenched vocal lines & atmospheric post-rock infusions. Every track is an emotive journey through the eyes of a sonic god. It is that good. The band is made up of  Andrea Crispy Smiths - Guitar and Vocals,  Manuel Fabbri - Bass, Matteo Sama - Guitar & Enrico Piraccini - Drums and Vocals. We've picked a few tracks from this 10 track debut album & you can read what we thought of them below:

[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=4182472178 size=large bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 tracklist=false artwork=small]

This albums opening track entitled ‘Autumn’, blissfully begins with haunting tones hugging the sonic ether & filing the air with ethereal vocal swells. Addictive guitar lines seep through this dream-pop infused highway and instantly suck you inside its dreamy soundscape. There are subtle hints of post-rock vibes swirling in amongst the reverb drenched guitar tracks but with an added, definitive heightened shoegaze intensity which keeps the listener attention transfixed on the track.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=4182472178 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1927555286]

Track 2 ‘Etere’ is another stunning, hauntingly brilliant slice of shoegaze magnificence, infused with dream-pop flair. Heavier in parts than the opening track, it traverses a fine line between full on nu-gaze & old school dream-pop, but it lacks absolutely nothing. It floats on wall of lush tones & reverb induced sonic swells. Simply divine! Check it out:

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=4182472178 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=419597223]

‘Love Flows’, Track 3 on 'Imprinting', showcases its addictive qualities from the off. A wall of lush vocal’s, catchy guitars, synth swells with a solid drum track cementing in a foundation of musical bliss to die for! Another stunning track from this Italian gazing outfit.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=4182472178 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=1717691739]

Don’t be fooled into thinking that Track 5 on this impressive release is anything less than masterful. ‘Kimono Lights’ have this knack of enticing you into their tracks with beautifully crafted songs filled with light & dark moments intertwined gracefully in slow melodic soundscapes. ‘Daydream’ begins like a precious bird in flight on a calm day only to explode like a post-rock behemoth, force fed on a diet of full on shoegazing goodness! This is a stunning track that runs & runs and it’s probably my favourite track on this impressive debut album from another very impressive Italian shoegazing band.

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=4182472178 size=small bgcol=333333 linkcol=e32c14 track=3690256555]

Check out any of the 10 Tracks on this album & I can guarantee that you will fall in love with its sonic swells & reverb drenched guitar lines. The vocal tracks alone will enthral you. They tell a story through the medium of shoegaze, just like albums created in this genre of music are supposed to do. This album keeps it’s secrets firmly hidden inside each track & makes you sit, listen, take in every single note & every single piece of production, just to find out all about them! How many bands out there today can do that? Yes, there are post-rock edges to ‘Imprinting’, but I think it only enhances the full on ‘Kimono Lights’ soundscape experience. Its yet another string to their very impressive musical bow. This is a wonderfully addictive album that deserves respect.
