RELEASE: Swim EP
RELEASE DATE: 28th April 2017
RECORD COMPANY: Across The Floor Records
Aarhus based noisy duo 'ZRN' have released their latest five track behemoth entitled 'Swim' to the masses back at the end of April 2017. 'ZRN' are a side project of monstrous Danish psych rockers 'Tales Of Murder And Dust' and their sound has gone from meandering, atmospheric almost slowcore/shoegaze leanings on their 2015 full-length release 'Animous' into a more of a menacing experimental/noise rock orientation on these new tracks. The EP was officially released back on the 28th April 2017 via and it is available to buy/download right now from zrnband.bandcamp.com
Swim EP by ZRN
In a spiralling drone and accompanied by sequenced production theatrics the opening salvos of 'Across' sweep into earshot dragged by the fizz of undulating synth and the hypnotic call of dark malevolent atmosphere. Chalking in at a full twelve minutes long this track circumnavigates a stunning array of sound waves as it's gravitational pull buffers and pivots sequenced bleeps and whirrs with stunning effect. It groans and creeks in parts as it's soaring synth lines cut deep sonic throughs through delayed reverberations, rippling magnificent swathes of ambient & lo-fi permutations out into the ether. 'Across' is an absolutely magnificent opening track. Up next, the EP's lead single staggers into audible range. 'Deep End' is immensely infectious! It undulates and snakes on layers of dark, noisy bass frequencies supplemented with repetitive lead lines, shimmering tambourine shakes and a heavy sense of sonic foreboding. It's vocal lines glide and snake in and out of the instrumentation, under constant bombardment from whirring lead guitar lines and addictively atmospheric production.
'Diving Off' stalks metronomically into the ether pulling with it those deep dark plods of menacing piano that seem to echo and billow as they fall. Haunting vocalisations accompanied by swirling synth swells swim in dark reverberation as growling guitar & undulating fret noise envelope the entire track in ink black atmosphere. Absolutely immense, 'Diving Off' is probably my favourite track on the entire release. Up next the album deftly unfurls it's penultimate piece. The shuddering twang of overdriven guitar held fast in a regimental flight path builds and shudders through layers of resonating frequencies. 'Slow Affection' has mantra like qualities that whip and curl brilliantly around the inner psyche. It's vocal lines are distant, almost demon like as they ride turbulent instrumentation mixed with intermittent sequenced theatrics to blistering effect. The EP closes out with a dark slab of experimental noise. 'Dry' is an intoxicating affair filled with infectious vocalisations, sequenced electronics and dark, jittering synth swells that are collectively drenched in massive swathes of reverb. It pulses wave after wave of dark atmospherics as it traverses three minutes plus of immense production. A brilliant ending to a very interesting EP.

Before I Crash by Moon Loves Honey
Danish based dream-gazers ‘Moon Loves Honey’ have just announced a stunning new single entitled 'Before I Crash', their first release of 2017 and the follow up to their immense November 2016 single 'Should Have Waited'. Their collective sound comprises of a hazy mix of melodic dream pop and blissfully layered shoegaze an they are made up of Jeppe Dengsø – Vocal/Guitar, Stine Drejer – Vocal/Synth, Johan Gudmandsen – Bass & Ludvig Kastberg on drums. This latest single is averrable to buy/download right now from moonloveshoney.bandcamp.com
'Before I Crash' begins with a single atmospherically repetitive synth line that quickly builds into a melee of beautifully layered sonic frequencies. This track explodes with melody as its soaring guitars, driving precision and cascading synth lines loop and arc throughout the piece, deftly circumnavigating those blissfully ethereal, light and airy vocalisations.
Danish based atmospheric post-gazing four piece ‘FugleFlugten’ have unleashed a brand new single and it's accompanying video entitled ‘En Anden Side Af Ting’ lifted off their forthcoming sophomore EP penned in for release over the coming months. Their sound swirls within a heady mix of reverb induced post-punk, shimmering synth swells and subtle hints of hazily layered shoegaze. Singing in their native tongue, ‘Fugleflugten’ are made up of Rasmus Yde, Frederik Henriksen, Mathias Rosenkilde & Laurits Pilegaard and if you like what you hear you can head over to soundcloud.com/fugleflugten to keep up to date with everything Fugleflugten related.
Danish based noisy alt-psych duo 'ZRN' have released a crawling sonic behemoth in the form of their latest single 'Deep End', lifted from their forthcoming EP entitled 'Swim' penned in for release sometime in April 2017. 'ZRN' are a side project of monstrous Danish psych rockers 'Tales Of Murder And Dust' and their sound has gone from meandering, atmospheric almost slowcore/shoegaze leanings on their 2015 full-length release 'Animous' into a more of a menacing noise rock orientation on these new tracks. In the bands own words 'Deep End' is "a feminist battle hymn" and it was recorded with the backdrop of the US elections hanging over all of our heads. It deals with some very real & dangerous subject matter, focusing on the bleak outlook of a polarized society, where the basic respect for a woman's body and rights is under attack.
'Deep End' is immensely infectious! It undulates and snakes on layers of dark, noisy bass frequencies supplemented with repetitive lead lines, shimmering tambourine shakes and a heavy sense of sonic foreboding. It's vocal lines glide and snake in and out of the instrumentation, under constant bombardment from whirring lead guitar lines and atmospheric production theatrics. There are sublet hints of 'Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch' and seminal UK noise gazers 'Cranes' pulsing through Deep End's inner core that are incredibly addictive. Roll on the full EP!

Formed in 2007, Danish psych-gazing five piece ‘Tales Of Murder And Dust’ create stunning soundscapes of immense proportions that continuously push the boundaries of our psychedelic awareness. Vocally sublime, they meld together a subtle brand of dark shoegaze with psych rock to create an impressive cacophony of sound that includes pounding drums, waves of droning and noisy guitars, violins, sitars and impressive organ swells. Their latest album ‘The Flow In Between’ got it's official release on the 23rd March 2016 via the brilliant London based Fuzz Club Records and is available right now on various from www.fuzzclub.com
The Flow In Between by Tales Of Murder And Dust
The opening track on this impressive release is ‘Tidal Waves’. Creeping, maleficent percussion and dark guitar swells entice the hauntingly brilliant violin to loop and arc throughout the sonic atmosphere as the introduction of intermittent drum hits adds intensity. When the vocal arrives it does so on a wave of beautiful noise thats reminiscent of some religious choir holed up in a cavernous church hall with its layers of impressive vocals dripping wet with stunning reverb. A deliciously sublime whirling drone, riding a hypnotically tempestuous shuffling drum pattern, heralds the arrival of track two ‘Black Reflections’ and with it comes that undeniably addictive floating vocal line, hauntingly swirling within a dark melodic sonic stew. ‘Black Reflections’ hits you right between the eyes, awakening something rather special. Track three ‘The Devil Is A Poet’ drags itself into the sonic ether on a wave of impressive guitars, soaring organ swells, sparse percussion and hypnotic tambourine hits. Reminiscent at times to ‘Spacemen 3’ or Sean Cook’s (Ex-Spiritualized) ‘Lupine Howl’ with its opiate induced vocal production, ‘The Devil Is A Poet’ is a shuffling slab of sonic darkness personified.
Up next, ‘Mirror’ sweeps into view and brings with it a certain feeling of unease as a dark, brooding cacophony of droning guitars, haunting vocal lines and steading drums collectively gives off a processional feeling. This is another impressive track, full of widescreen cinematic qualities and intense musical atmospherics. A throbbing bass line, hiding a subtle droning guitar leads us into track four, the explosive ‘Sisters’. As a swirling vocal progression intertwined within a melodic ball of noise greets the listener, this track unfolds into something magical with its melodic violins, pounding drums and delightful sonic peaks and troughs. Track five, ‘Distored Ways’ is nine minutes plus of mind inducing psychedelic brilliance. This track is a vivid maelstrom of droning guitars, haunting sitars & violins, hypnotic explosive drum patterns and that circumnavigate that impressive swirling vocal progression. A masterpiece of epic proportions and possibly my favourite track on this entire release.
Squalling feedback announces the arrival of the albums closing track ‘Endless Repetition’ as that dark hypnotic vocal progression grabs you, pulling you into a swirling whirlwind of golden orchestral instrumentation and beautifully constructed musical progressions. That swirling drone works its magic, stirring the entire sonic composition with aplomb, adding atmosphere and bringing up new psychedelic visions with each reverberating pass.
This entire collection of tracks is an edge of your seat, no holds barred, sonic journey of psychedelic discovery.

Danish based atmospheric post-gazing four piece ‘FugleFlugten’ self-released their debut five track EP entitled ‘Aftenpragtstjerne’ to the masses back in June. Their sound swirls within a heady mix of reverb induced post-punk, shimmering synth swells and subtle hints of hazily layered shoegaze. Singing in their native tongue, ‘Fugleflugten’ are made up of Rasmus Yde, Frederik Henriksen, Mathias Rosenkilde & Laurits Pilegaard and you can check out the full EP over at: soundcloud.com/fugleflugten/sets/aftenpragtstjerne
Murmuring synth swells coupled with droning guitar frequencies bounce and swirl freely as the opening instrumental bars of ‘Aftenpragtstjerne’ announce themselves to earshot. It quickly burns out only to be replaced by track two, the highly addictive ‘Syv Pelikaner’. This track drives a solid wedge of layered reverberating guitars, soaring synth swells, throbbing bass frequencies and pounding poly-rythmns into one massive cyclonic force that collectively seems to circumnavigate that hauntingly brilliant vocal track. Up next, the atmospheric ‘Det Er På Tide’ floats into the ether on a wave of shimmering guitars that act like a protective barrier surrounding that immense vocal line. Synth progressions swell as the drum track pounds a sonic furrow through proceedings and the track is allowed to breathe and soar with ease, looping and arcing through peaks and troughs of reverberating joy.
The EP’s penultimate piece is my favourite on this entire release. ‘Ensom Galakse’ traverses the outer fringes of expressive post-punk, coupled with brilliantly vivid swathes of atmospheric shoegaze thats all gracefully topped off with soaring synth swells and hazy reverb laden vocals. A stunning track thats worthy of your ears! There’s an intense post-punk swirl streaming through the EP’s closing track. ‘Fugleflugten’ pulses with intent as the bass frequencies growl and hold fast to those impressive drums. There’s a swirling maelstrom of guitars sitting just under the mix allowing for those shimmering vocal lines to soar into the sonic ether. A stunning droning finale to a brilliantly executed EP.
RELEASE: Body Cults
RELEASE DATE: November 4th 2016
RECORD COMPANY: Bad Afro Records
'Narcosatanicos' are a psych/prog/noise rock band from denmark and are by all means laying down the 'Danelaw' once again. In a world populated with Sonic Youth and MBV 2.0's this band immediately caught my ears as if a sawn off shotgun had been unloaded into them and the surrounding areas of my mind.
Echoing the experimental ballsyness of 'Can' ,the brute force of 'Black Sabbath' and dare I say saxyness of 'Bitches Brew' era 'Miles Davis' all the while keeping it brilliantly psych! This is something I personally admire in a world where people are relying more on their foot pedals than their actual fingers, this band is cataclysmically heavy and experimental in equal measure (These boys definitely love 'Mastodon').
Body Cults by Narcosatanicos
'Body Cults' is an exhibition of all of the most twisted elements I mentioned above. If you are reading this and have not heard the album yet, go into this album after an argument with the Mrs, a shitty day at work or after the results of America's recent election to feel it in its full nature.
There is absolutely no point in me explaining the tracks, 'track by track' while I have a link ready for you with which you can experience it for yourself.
If you have gotten this far by reading then you are likely to already be interested.
Instead of the usual track by track verbose nonsense where I try and plug my agenda to you, I will just suggest standout tracks. The opener 'Vulvic Church' is a crafty beast whilst 'Television Dreams' reminds me of Earthworm Jim for the Sega Mega Drive for some reason?! 'Matamoros' is why I added the 'Miles Davis' reference and of course the hard hitting lead single 'Vile'.

Robert Mulhern is the vocalist, guitarist, producer & engineer in Irish based heavy experimental psych-gazers 'Tuath'. Hailing from Donegal in the North of the Republic, Robert’s musical influences span numerous genres and are far reaching. 'Tuath' are quietly establishing themselves as forerunners in Ireland’s experimental shoegaze & psych-rock scene.
Danish based experimental lo-fi aficionado Jacob Faurholt aka 'Crystal Shipsss' has been releasing lo-fi home recordings, 90's inspired indie rock and ambient drone metal under both his own name and his alias 'Crystal Shipsss' for almost 10 years. His latest album, under the 'Crystal Shipsss' moniker, entitled 'Holly' was released back in May 2016 and features bubblegum pop intertwined with dreamy lo-fi progressions, heavy psych and noisy instrumental outbursts. 'World' is the latest single & accompanying video to be lifted from the aforementioned album.
'World' ambles into the ether on a repetitious percussive pattern underscored by soaring layered synth swells, throbbing bass frequencies and Jacob Faurholt's dulcet tones. The message held within this track is perfectly clear; we're all doomed and 'Crystal Shipss' have been gifted with the mantle of chief naysayer - It's A Burning World!

Astral Tide are a Berlin based 5-piece with members from England, Italy, Denmark and Germany. Collectively they create something immensely brilliant. Their sound is sonically infused with full on dark ethereal post-punk intertwined at times with flourishes of noise-pop & deep layered shoegaze! Their latest release 'Glimpses' is a thrill ride through pathways of dark synth swells, fuzzy shoegaze, pounding drums & that trademark modern day post punk vocal attack. The band will record their first official debut EP over the coming months along with releasing a video for current track 'Glimpses'. With third track entitled 'Haunt You' on the way Astral Tide are ones to watch this Summer.
In the first ever interview on THE PRIMAL MUSIC BLOG, Danish gazers - Spökraket, who have just released their latest immense collection of tracks to the general public entitled 'In A Witch Forest', answered our laid back questioning with some rather interesting results! Spökraket are a neo-psychedelic band from Århus, Denmark formed in 2010. Their aim is to explore, experiment, jam, change and grow, both in their combined studio and practice room Cable Hell & on stage where the goal is to give a unique experience in the moment. 'In A Witch Forest', their latest opus, is a truly wonderful album. So much so, that we reckon that it'll be in our top 10 albums of 2015 come years end. The Primal Music Blog caught up with the band & grilled them on their musical adventures thus far -
1) WHO ARE YOU? TELL US ABOUT THE FORMATION OF THE BAND & IT'S HISTORY?
Our history is rather complicated despite the relatively short history of the band. We started out in 2010 when our former bass player Hans Christian and Jonathan met on the web and agreed to form a band. Soon after Bjørn and our former drummer Michael joined and we started recording improvisations with various singers. When we thought we'd settled for the right one he left one week before our first gig in April 2011 because his tinnitus issues didn't agree with playing in a loud psychedelic band so Jonathan had to take over the vocals, wrote an extra song in a rush, rewrite other things, rehearsed so much his throat hurt and he had to use MDMA and Japanese mint tea in order to able to even speak normally. Despite all that the gig went fine. We bought a four track tape recorder and recorded our first album quickly. Looking back the album was a fucking mess but had it's charm. Soon after Michael moved back to Odense and joined our friends from The Road To Suicide and we couldn't deal with having a drummer living so far away which Michael understood. He travelled to gigs while we were looking for another drummer. At the time our ever returning part time member Thomas played drums occasionally while recording and guitar for gigs. Sinas was an old jam mate of Jonathan and they bumped into each other at a demonstration and he joined.
Around this time we got joined by Freja (synths, vocals) and Kasper (in NarcoSatanicos now) and started recording. Freja left after a short while but has played with us sometimes since then, she sings on two songs on the new album and contributed a bit to "Darling Adharma". By the end of the recording of "Darling Adharma", Solveig joined on vocals and live guitar, played some gigs with us but left in mid-2013. In 2013 we released a split 12" with The Road To Suicide and the double album "Darling Adharma" on cassette, download and CD-R. In the Autumn Hans Christian quit. We were fed up with the ever changing line up and decided to focus on recording for as long as it took and to not get any new core members before the record was finished, though we had valuable contributions from Thomas and Freja on the new album. None of them have the time to rehearse or record two times a week though so we started looking for other members and Tobias and Jacob have agreed to join us for gigs with the option that they might become full-time members if everything works out well and it most definitely has so far. I think we got the strongest version of Spökraket ever as we got serious focus while still having lots of fun. We've finally found a proper balance between utter mess and discipline.
2) WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES?
My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3 and various spin-offs, Happy Mondays, Mazzy Star, Tinariwen, The Velvet Underground, The Electronic Hole, The Orient Express, The United States of America, White Noise, Cocteau Twins, Snöleoparden, Jesus and Mary Chain, loads of 60′s and 70′s classic pop and rock music like Simon & Garfunkel, Stones, Beatles, Creedence and such, Erkin Koray, Johnny Cash, Lee Hazlewood, Selda Bagcan, BJM, Goat, Funkadelic, Can, Neu!, Faust, Tangerine Dream, Slowdive, Primal Scream, Snöleoparden, NarcoSatanicos, Morgan Square and many others.
Guitarwise our biggest influences might be Phil Pearlman of The Electronic Hole and Relatively Clean Rivers and Jonas Stampe of Snöleoparden and Mekka for their ability to create folky, Middle Eastern inspired sounds with a very raw, improvisational and primal sound to it. Kevin Shields for the amazing sonic texture and for completely redefining the guitar, Keith Richards for his hard working mentality and rhytmical drive and anyone who ever played guitar in Velvet Underground for proving that soul, drive and personality is way more important to guitar playing than technical wank. Peter Kember and Jason Pierce of Spacemen 3 for their minimalism.
Production wise Roy Hallee, Phil Ramone, Kevin Shields, Jimmy Miller, George Martin, Delia Derbyshire and Lee Hazlewood are our heroes. Looking at those names we realise that the music world is way too male dominated, it's a huge problem that needs to be adressed.
3) DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
Psychedelic, powerful, layered, eclectic, moody, often quite improvised although more so in the past.
4) WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START MAKING MUSIC?
Jonathan: As a kid I had a huge fascination for The Beatles, Johnny Cash and Simon & Garfunkel, my dad was a hi-fi freak and my mom is a decent guitar player. So I started reading rock magazines, books about The Beatles and even a whole rock encyclopaedia. I knew that I wanted to make music although it was only much later I started getting serious about it and it took me even longer to find the right group of people to work with.
5) WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE BANDS & ALBUMS?
Jonathan: I Think I've listed a few bands in that torrent of name dropping earlier in the interview, haha. My all time favourite album is "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine as it was truly groundbreaking in every way and has amazing songs. "The Velvet Underground & Nico" and the only album released by The Orient Express definitely in my top ten as well.
6) MUSICALLY, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS OVER THE NEXT YEAR?
We're gonna play as many gigs as we possibly can; small and medium sized venues in Denmark this spring, small hippie festivals this summer and then hopefully some trips to Germany and Sweden before too long. The Swedes have a more humanistic approach to foreigners than the racist shit mentality that have become mainstream in Denmark. And they know how to pronounce our bandname which is kindda rare elsewhere.
Jonathan: I do some production work and engineering which I love almost as much as playing so when we don't have gigs I'll mess with that. We're soon getting nice mixing desk for our studio, can't wait. Gonna finish a record with Hunger on that one and do the majority of the Morgan Square album on it as well. With music I'm a true workaholic - With other aspects of life I'm a lazy bum. Spökraket will probably do occasional recording, but it'll take at least a year before we're hiding in the studio again! We need a bit of sunshine!
We'd like to give big, big thanks to Spökraket for giving their time to answer our questions! You can find out more about the band by perusing their social media pages below & their latest release "In A Witch Forest" is now available to download from their Bandcamp page with options for vinyl copies due in May or June 2015. We reviewed it for this blog after it's release & you can check out what we thought of it HERE.
