Brazilian based noisy post-gazing duo 'Everso' have unleashed a stunning new single entitled 'Silence/Disarm' b/w 'Rebirth'. The band are made up of Daniel Ikuma - guitars/bass/vocals & Rock Silveira - drums/backing vocals with Daniel Watanabe from 'Alma Mater Band' contributing some song arrangements on this release. 'Everso' have a sound that is inherently shoegaze orientated with subtle underlying layers of alt-rock and swirling post-rock bubbling under the surface. 'Silence/Disarm' streams into the ether on hazy waves of reverberation. A fuzzy wall of guitars ride a tempestuous percussive swagger as throbbing bass frequencies hum and fizz enveloping that sublime vocalisation whilst 'Rebirth' sits firmly in the atmospheric post-rock stable with ambient like guitars swirling around fragile vocals, driving bass lines, whooshing cymbal crashes and massive swathes of percussive noise.

EP REVIEW | Travelling Wave - Simoom

a3623867932_16ARTIST: Travelling Wave

RELEASE: Simoom

RELEASE DATE: 28th August 2016

RECORD COMPANY: Unsigned

Following on from their blistering 2013 full length release 'T-Wave' and their impressive collection of singles since that debut release including Adidas Shoestrings (April. 2014), Tradition and Evolution (May.2014) and A Cloud of Madness (Nov.2014), comes the latest immense assault on the senses from stunning Brazil based psych/gaze outfit Travelling Wave. The Simoom EP is a sonically sublime collection of four tracks that swirl gracefully within a hazy reverberating cloud of layered frequencies, soaring instrumentation and gloriously addictive vocal progressions. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Travelling Wave, the band are made up of Carol Alleoni - vocal/synth, Thiago Altafini - guitar/backvocal, Nathalia Oliveira - drums & Vitor Galvão -bass/synth and this latest EP is available to buy/download right now from travellingwave.bandcamp.com

Simoom opens up, squeezed within a swirling drone before Travelling Wave unleash their full instrumental might in the form of a massive wall of reverberating noise, coupled with pounding drums & soaring synth swells that impressively envelopes that addictive vocal will ease. 'In A Dream' undulates as it loops and arc's high into the ether, eventually soaring into its chorus progressions, blissfully spraying beautifully iridescent layered frequencies like sonic raindrops onto their listeners ears. A stunning opening salvo! Up next, 'Lotus' shimmies into earshot on glorious synth swells and throbbing bass frequencies before its metronomic percussive attack takes hold and the track sways into action with the addition of a melodious dark bass line. The guitars wail and intertwine with the instrumentation as the creeping vocal arrives, held fast within a pulsating sonic pulse. 'Lotus' meanders maliciously as it works through its gears, building tempestuously into a whirlwind of intense noise that crashes to finality like storm driven waves breaking on a perilous beach.

Dark swirling organ swells coupled with throbbing bass frequencies announce the arrival of 'Wind May', the EP's penultimate track, before we're swept up and dragged into the abyss by pounding drums and the arrival of droning guitars and reverb induced vocal progressions. Travelling Wave can instil stunningly dark atmosphere at will, dragging their listeners with them on a reverb filled thrill ride that breaks through layers of tremulous frequencies and soars into the ether. Vocaly sublime, 'Wind May' is a delicious slice of modern psych/gaze and my favourite track on this entire release. The EP's closing piece is a thing of beauty. 'The Unseen' launches into a maelstrom of instrumentation, with its pounding drums, cascading sweeps of monumental organ and synth swells, driving bass lines & droning guitars. Its explodes into its chorus progressions, ramping up the overdrive and pulsing immense reverberating instrumentation into the sonic ether. A blissful ending to a magnificent EP.

EP REVIEW | Jewish Mandiolo - Gustavinho Debaixo D'água

ARTIST: Jewish Mandiolo

RELEASE: Gustavinho Debaixo D'água

RELEASE DATE: 09/07/15

RECORD COMPANY: Unsigned

'The Jewish kings' are a new experimental post rock band from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil who specialize in experimental textures, flamboyant Latin grooves but with guitar effects that larry lalonde (Primus guitarist) would be wet for! The band are made up of Bernardo Arenari, Luiz Bento, Denisson Caminha, David Dinucci & Danilo Nagib.

In the first track 'Agua' we are exposed to almost too much coolness for a mans ears to take. The opening chords are vague, spacious and driving while the bass leans over and gives yer ears a wee sombre kiss coupled with a subtle whisper conveying its love for making you happy. This track goes in and out of dominent 6th chords that add such a strange resolution - resolution - resolution kind of feel to the progression as opposed to the usual tension - resolve setup of our tritonic Jazz forefathers. After our typical start the tracks middle section takes us to shoegaze land where we swallow a dose of some concotion off of the same shelf as 'Do Make Say Think's - Goodbye Enemy Airship or The Landlord Is Dead' album's of yore! Of course then it takes us into a combination of the two but with an added brass section...... and as the main songwriter in 'Tuath', I love me a brass section! The crescendo in this track is so expertly conveyed that you will wonder how this band are just on their first EP.

The third track 'Imersáo' has a shoegazey type of James Bond feel that you just gotta check out. You will not be able to prevent yourself from singing 'Live And Let Die' over the tune. This track has elements of 'Yo La Tengo' on vocals but with some of the same guitar textures of 'Conan Mockasins' debut album! While listening to it I was tempted to name drop 'Neutral Milk Hotel' in terms of the way his voice sounds. 'Imersáo' stinks of late 90's guitar 'Radiohead' but upon saying that it is still its own buzz! I reccomend experimenting with some 'Bucolic Remedies' before listening to this track. For absolutely no reason  at the end of this song it blasts the distortion really loudly with some delicious unison bends. I am not sure weather this was a half assed ending or if they genuinely planned it to sound like this but either way I love it. Check it out:

'Amor LIquido' is by far the coolest track on this EP. The intro is in an odd groove and takes me back to 'Bad Moon Rising' in terms of guitar sound. The drum sound is grainy & the bass doesn't give a toss about frequency masking and then imagine that 'Sonic Youth' had the cop on to include a brass section? Because of course they incorporate some really tense but harmonic brass harmonies all the while incorporating some Rio De Janeiro musical stylings in the form of some claps. In my opinion this is an excellent thing to do as it completely melds the culture from which this band come with the music that they like. The Jazzy Latin flavors are bloody magic & they make me want to go and put some trad onto the next 'Tuath' record. Also I must add that unlike most experimental bands these dudes sing in their own language which again, as the main songwriter in 'Tuath' I think is a magic buzz altogether and they should be stamped for their bravery in the field.

'Merguhlar' is a song I am going to mention even though I didnt enjoy it for a contradictary reason: The first half of it is a story and it is in Portuguese & due to this it takes ages to get to the meat and potato's! This would not be a problem for me if I spoke Portuguese but I don't unfortunately. Anyways when it does kick off it is beautiful and contains some of the nicest shoegaze out there at the moment as it boasts some beautiful off kilter harmonies, the right amount of distortion and the panning techniques keep the sound interesting. Check this track out:

The EP's closer 'Foz (Debaixo D'água)' is a feel good, Jazzular & almost Funk effort that lands directly at a loud Post Punk mid section half way through the intro but with the anthemic shouting of a lot of modern Indie music. These guys really know how to progress their music in an intricate way and this song is a great example of that. This is by far my second favorite track on this EP. It's a lovely closer & a magic sign off for what is a short but great listening experience.

This band are great but I feel with a bit more experimentation they will be quite a force to be reckoned with. I doubt I will ever see this band live but I am a big fan of their sound.

I rate this 4 out of 5.

NEW MUSIC PREMIERE | MAQUINAS - Zolpidem

Brazilian based experimental shoegazers 'Maquinas' return with another stunning single this time lifted from their forthcoming full release due to drop in the coming months. 'zolpidem' is a moody fuzzy noisy affair with a subtle post rock beginning that leads to an immense build up & on into its emotively explosive finale. The band are made up of Roberto Borges – guitar, Samuel Carvalho - guitar/vocals, Ricardo “Guile” Lins – drums & Allan Dias – bass. We previously featured their earlier self titled release  on Primal Radio.

Zolpidem is a hypnotic drug used to aid inducing sleep in individuals with dyssomnia and sleepless nights. After ingestion in 30 minutes if the individual does not lie down, the drug can be a powerful hypnotic that opens the mind to internal hallucinations, creating the sensation of dreaming, even when awake. A lucid dream is where one has the impression of being awake, even though he is sleeping, and everything in that universe is tangible and moldable, but in fact, there is really nothing there, even after being awake such dream experiences appear to be so real.

'Zolpidem' also marks a new moment for 'Maquinas' with lineup changes. The band are now settled with Samuel Carvalho on guitars and Ricardo “Guile” Lins on drums

'Zolpidem' is free to download right now up on the bands Bandcamp page - Maquinas.bandcamp.com
