EP REVIEW | VYMAANIKA - Spectroscope EP

ARTIST: Vymaanika

RELEASE: Spectroscope EP

RELEASE DATE: June 1st 2017

RECORD COMPANY: Unsigned

Barcelona based 'Vymaanika' is a drone-heavy experimental prog & space rock collective with a sound thats underpinned by motorik krautrock and swirling psych. Consisting of Benjamin Mahoney - guitar/vocals/synths, Carles Esteban guitar/vocals/synths, Jose Jünemann - drums/synths & Andrés Paniagua - bass this magnificent quartet come from different parts of the globe with varying degrees of experience from playing in bands such as sansoma, juneorjulyjinkovilova palaciomalson. They released their debut two-track EP entitled 'Spectroscope' back in June 2017 and it's available to buy/download right now via vymaanika.bandcamp.com

The EP's title track 'Spectroscope' swirls menacingly on a repetitive guitar line that pulses through layers of deep reverberation. Explosive progressive percussion builds from beneath the mix pulling cavernous synth swells, swirling instrumental drones, pulsing electronics and a magnificent vocal line with it as it melds brilliantly with turbulent guitars and the throb of luscious bass frequencies. Heady atmospherics accompany the instrumentation as they collectively dive headlong into a cyclonic sonic behemoth filled with motorik percussion. Coming in at ten minutes plus, 'Spectroscope' is a white knuckle thrill ride into a heady world of wide eyed sonic abandonment and a serious recommendation from us. Dive in!

The EP's closing piece offers a somewhat calm introduction. 'Golden Void' unfurls it's sonic tendrils and attaches itself to the strum of tremulous guitar and the swoosh of percussion. Slow moving at first, it builds momentum with each bar pulling different instrumentation with it as it slowly spirals skywards and out into the sonic ether. Hypnotically charged vocal lines ebb and flow through offbeat drum hits and layered reverb underpinned by repetitive progressions and mantra like qualities. But it's the immense instrumental break at five minutes in that catches this listener out as ''Vymaanika' inject a kind of lysergic energy into the mix pulling space rock, neo-psych and rolling waves of heady vibration into play, moulding the entire sonic concoction into one singular pulsating entity right up until it's turbulent finale. It's a really good ending to an immense EP. Hopefully we will hear more from these guys going forward. Recommended!

EP REVIEW | Telescope - Telescope EP

ARTIST: Telescope

RELEASE: Telescope

RELEASE DATE: 10th November 2017

RECORD COMPANY: Unsigned

Barcelona based neo-psych duo 'Telescope' unleashed their debut self-titled three track EP to the masses back on November 10th 2017. With a sound reminiscent of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dungen and Tame Impala this sweet little release caught our attention instantly. The band are made up of Esteban Garós & Luis Pomés and you can buy/download this impressive release right now via telescopebcn.bandcamp.com

The EP opens up swirling in muggy reverberating haze. Magically melodic sound waves intertwine with a rambling vocal performance as 'With Your Truth' unfurls it's sonic tendrils and explodes into a cacophony of colourful frequencies. Plodding bass lines meander and undulate brilliantly under busy percussion as catchy hook laden chord changes and the pull of fuzz laden guitars lead us into whirring, looping lead lines and sublime passages of neo-psychedelia. Up next, 'Adrift' bounced into the ether on a melodic bass signature as tambourine hits and swirling organ swells announce the arrival of a catchy lead guitar line and reverb laden vocalisations. It's chorus parts are utterly addictive and they show off the songwriting prowess that this duo possess. There's also a fantastic modern psych feel to this track although it does have passages of 60's psych pop attached to it's kaleidoscopic vibrations.

The EP closes out with 'Not Your Game', a tumbling shimmering behemoth that rumbles through a melody strewn landscape filled with addictive bass fills, explosive percussion and brilliantly executed instrumentation. Leads guitars lick and harass impressive vocalisations before that synth line permeates the ether and instantly adds golden atmosphere to proceedings. A masterful ending to brilliantly executed EP.

Recommended!

READ ON -

Ethereal vocals coupled with a wall hazily layered guitars announces the arrival of track one ‘Sasebo’ and we’re instantly pulled into a beautiful world of sneaking drum patterns, underlying synth swells and hypnotically cascading piano progressions. The vocals are simply mesmerising as they cut through the swirling instrumentation and instil a gentle calmness over proceedings. Up next, ‘Sea Of Trees’ is a classic slice of beautifully arranged dream pop thats centred around a cascading synth line, a repetitive drum pattern and another blissful vocal performance courtesy of Emilia Bahamonde. ‘Me And The Void’ saunters into earshot riding an explosive drum pattern, dark throbbing bass frequencies and synth swells to die for. Emilia’s vocals shine as they pulse wave after wave of golden hued frequencies through the controlled reverberation and on into the maelstrom of fuzzy tempestuous guitar lines.

‘U.S.S.R Girls’ leans more into the realm of dark electronica with its sequenced synth progressions and repetitive drum patterns whilst the albums penultimate track, the impressive ‘Daywalkers’ instantly flatters with its floating boy/girl vocal attack, courtesy of Emilia & Alex Kretov (Ummagma), coupled with those beautifully arranged synth lines & its glorious instrumentation breaks. The album closes out with the highly atmospheric instrumental piece - ‘Loner’. A dark & foreboding reverberating drone opens proceedings before we’re treated to a slow, repetitive drum pattern and stuttering piano stabs. ‘Loner’ sounds like it belongs on a late 70’s sci-fi soundtrack as it deftly meanders through ambient sonic peaks and throughs, never losing its edge and all the while building slowly into a stunning cacophony of blissful atmospheric noise.

A fitting end to an absolutely stunning album!
